Is this useable? It's the only name we can agree on and it's really growing on me. Surname is boring/fairly common 2 syllables and middle name would be Francesca which is a tribute to a family member. We don't want Francesca as a first name as the family is full of Frank's and Frankies! What do you think?

It's quite a harsh sounding name, things like Betsy, Kitty, Violet and Sylvia might be old-fashioned but they sound nicer imo.

Veronica really says old lady - and for some reason nun, no idea why? - to me, much more so than Vera.

Agree entirely that Central European "Vay-ra" (or something approximating that) sounds nicer than "Veee-ra".

I'm sorry, I think it's absolutely hideous.

If it was pronounced Verra, with a short 'e' sound like it is in parts of eastern Europe, then I don't mind it. Veera with a long 'e' - it's a no from me.

I'm not a fan. We considered it briefly for DD, but I just couldn't warm to it as a name. A friend from a similar (international) background ended up using it, and I still can't warm to the name despite her very smiley little one!

And my dds go to schools with a Cynthia, a Sylvia, a Jeffrey and a Betsy - all old people names but none of them get bullied because of it.

Maybe it depends on the area you're in.

DPs GM is Vera but really Veronica. Is Veronica an option? She could be Vera at home and maybe another nickname elsewhere if she wanted?

But I honestly don’t get the teasing comments with names like this, there’s ‘old lady names’ everywhere at the moment and more will come back. There’s Ivy’s and Clara’s everywhere, what’s the difference? It’s an old name not a silly name, kids won’t bat an eyelid in the few years.

My Nan was. Vera. She was the sweetest kindest strongest most caring lady you would ever wish to meet. The name to me reminds me of her and her character.

One of my dearest friends is a Vera so I find it hard not to like. Also, it means "springtime" so a lovely positive vibe to it.

I know it's a bit granny in the UK, but very common in German-speaking world for the baby boomer generation, so more on a par with Christine, Valerie, Rita, Shirley, etc.

A similar name with a younger demographic is Verena - pronounced Ver-ay-na - perhaps an alternative to consider?

Maybe those kids are a lot nicer than you. Wink And they certainly won't have whatever negative associations you have, so to them, Vera is just a name. No different from Violet, or Clara.

It's very old lady to me, and I wouldn't choose it myself, but I wouldn't let other kids' reactions put you off in the slightest.

Love Vera! I don't think it's ugly at all and kids born now won't know any of the old Veras. Can't easily be shortened...

There are girls names Iris, Henrietta, Edwina, Dorothy, Kitty, Clara.. what's so awful about Vera?
