Honouring a relative...

Hey guys,

Do you know any good middle names to honour an Amanda? Can't be Miranda/Mandy.

Sorry, just realised you wrote "not Mandy". What does Amanda go by the other 10% of the time?

Hadley Amanda Sage flows just as well as Hadley Amelia Sage. Hadley Leticia Sage flows well too. I think you're quite lucky that either option works. I think Amelia softens both Hadley and Sage which creates a nicer balance overall but it doesn't work as an honour to Amanda.

If she goes by Mandy then Amelia Mandy Sage could work? If not, then I wouldn't mess around too much with an honour name as it starts to lose it's value in the name.

I agree with other pp's - using anything other than Amanda wouldn't be honouring your relative at all. Tbh middle names are used rarely and I don't know many of my friends or their children's middle names; so if your only stumble is that you're not sure if it flows I wouldn't worry about that. FWIW I think the names sound good together.

I agree that it dishonours rather than honours them! We wanted to call the baby after Amanda but we didn't like the name so we used Miranda instead as it's nicer'

I like Hadley Amanda. It's nice.

Hadley Amanda Sage flows really well I think. Also people often ask on these boards about derivative names and posters are usually happy to suggest - maybe it's just that there aren't many alternative options for Amanda.

I suppose you could use, for example, a translation or a different form of the same name. E.g. you wanted to name the baby Charles after your dad so you called DD Charlotte, or your after your mum Jane, but you live in France so you name DD Jeanne.
Amelia in honour of Amanda is just wrong.

Not only does using a different name not honour the person, I'd say it actively dishonours them. Either use Amanda, or don't. But don't use something else and say it's in her honour.

Hadley just makes me think of Spandau Ballet, Sage makes me think of an accounting package.

If you are naming somebody after someone else, use their name, not some completely unrelated name that happens to look a bit similar.

Amanda has 'a man' in it.

If you’re using a name to honour someone then you should use their name or a diminutive that they use. If you’re using a contrived barely connected version then what’s the point?

Hadley Amanda Sage sounds fine anyway

Her middle name is Leticia... I think Hadley Amanda Sage is growing on me.. if it sounds ok

Amanda goes as well with Hadley and Sage as Amelia does. Although both are quite masculine.

I agree that it's only honouring someone if you use their actual name. What about using whatever Amanda's middle name is? Or surname/maiden name?

Honestly, using the name Miranda doesn't say honouring Amanda to me. Hadley Amanda Sage doesn't sound bad imo.

I'd use Amy at a push but tbh it isn't honouring Amanda to me, it's just vaguely similar.

Then just use Amanda, it sounds fine with the other names and does the job of honouring her, if you use another name like Amelia then your not honouring her at all.
