Sorry but I hate it. Ira means war, let alone the IRA association. But I hate all those 'I'm a macho fighting male' names like Dominic and Victor too.
So many gorgeous Biblical names, but that's not one imo.

Thanks all. It’s back to the drawing board. Still looking for ‘the one’ when it comes to boys names-they are so hard! I will have a proper look through all your suggestions this morning.

It’s is a lovely name, OP! Ignore all the weird IRA connotations. Since most people won’t ever see the kid’s name spelt out, it doesn’t matter anyway. Just do it if you love it.

Ira seems like an elderly woman's name to me.. very dated and feminine (imo at least). Like pp's suggestions of Ezra, Luca and Asher as alternatives. Ivan would also be lovely. :)

I also think Ira glass, and would never make the IRA connection, and I'm Irish but uncapitalised it wouldn't occur to me. Though my DH has ruled out Saoirse for similar reasons so I understand the concern.

I love Ezra, and Amos, and I also know an Irial (pronounced Ear-ial) which seem similar in style?

I find it really interesting that pp read Ira as a girl's name. It's completely a boy's name to me! Love Ira Glass AND Ira Gerswhin. Good history, that name.

Definitely would drum up IRA connotations in the UK, a bit like calling a child Isis...both legitimate names with unfortunate associations with these acronyms .

I'm dutch and still my first thought was the IRA. So You might want to think of something else (unless you agree with what their views and methods were but I guess/hope that is unlikely).

I think of Ira Gershwin. It didn't remind me of the IRA, because I would only pronounce it as IRA if it was in capitals.

It means wrath in several Mediterranean languages. That, plus IRA, makes me associate the name to violence...
