DH and I are really struggling with a name for our second DC due any day now. We both like Tristan but neither of us are completely convinced by it. I like that it is a traditional but uncommon name, and DH likes that it is Celtic.

My main concern at the moment is that if you google Tristan it comes up with loads of pages about Tristan Thompson and the Kardashians! I hate the thought of that being people's first thought when they hear the name.

What do you think about it?

Posh and a bit wet. Sorry.

DollyDayScream · 03/06/2018 09:38

A bright, cheerful, sporty but not overbearingly competitive good guy.

flumpybear · 03/06/2018 09:26

I really like it! One of my really good friends names too Grin

userabcname · 03/06/2018 09:25

Stardust. Also I went to school with a Tristan- he was nice enough. I quite like it.

NordicNobody · 03/06/2018 09:19

It was on our short list for DS but we were put off by the various meanings of "noisy" and "sad", plus obviously the T&I story itself isn't very happy (same reason we're put off the name Isolde). Absent those things I still think it's a really lovely name but it got a very poor reception whenever we shared our short list (won't make that mistake twice!).

George & Mildred .

SkinniesAreOver · 03/06/2018 09:11

Is it cornish? I didnt know that. It sounds a bit weak as a name.

lljkk · 03/06/2018 09:08

We thought The meaning is Cornish for Thomas. Thomas means twin. Do you not like twins?

Other meanings I find online are (French) Tumult & noisy (Welsh). Those last 2 fit my DS well. Grin

Flamingosnbears · 03/06/2018 08:07

I actually really like Tristan however the meaning puts me off...

Firstly, Tristan Thompson - cheating partner of Khloe Kardashian all over the tabloids currently.

Secondly, a preppy, blonde school boy from a middle class family. I did go to school with a Tristan who very much fitted this criteria and he was lovely.

brimfullofasha · 02/06/2018 23:07

Public school boy

Baubletrouble43 · 02/06/2018 22:56

I know someone called drustyn which is quite similar but also nice I think.

penguinsnpandas · 02/06/2018 22:46

The vet and a posh boy from uni

elQuintoConyo · 02/06/2018 22:45

It makes me think "my parents don't like me".

It's a bit of a flaccid name imho.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/06/2018 22:43

James Herriot here as well! I like the name though.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 02/06/2018 22:42

Wet and wimpy

GibbertyFlibbert · 02/06/2018 22:42

Upper class and old-fashioned

MollyHuaCha · 02/06/2018 22:41

I like it.

jade9390 · 02/06/2018 22:41

I like it but it always reminds me of George and Mildred

StealthPolarBear · 02/06/2018 22:40

My little boy. Much like ax labradot, blonde scruffy hair. Needs lots of exercise. Never happier than when he's causing destruction. Very cuddly. Very funny.

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 02/06/2018 22:40

I really like Tristan (elegant, classic, unusual but not too out there) and have never heard of Tristan Thompson.

The name makes me think of:

My friend's son
A Jilly Cooper character called Tristan de Montigny (sexy French film director)
Tristan & Isolde
All Creatures Great & Small

ICantCopeAnymore · 02/06/2018 22:39

I went to school with a Tristan. He was a scrawny, ginger kid with a satchel.

DS' friend is Trystan. He's a scrawny, ginger kid with no satchel.

I'm disappointed.

SlowlyShrinking · 02/06/2018 22:38

All creatures great and small. Peter Davidson in the 80s 👌🏽

SodTheGreenfly · 02/06/2018 22:35

Nicest of ds's friends. Lovely, kind, honest, masculine boy. Well off though and went onto a very well lnown public school.

RedDwarves · 02/06/2018 22:28

Just makes me think of tryst.

But it'd be considered chavvy where I live, so I can't help but think he might have brothers called Jordan and Jayden.
