Name anxiety!!

I was just interested in your opinions... I have never been a names person particularly until I had my baby boy. We have seemingly given him a very unique name, but didn’t seem rare to us as we both knew people called this. Everyone was shocked as my older daughter has a very popular, “normal”, classic name. Also, a lot of people say it’s a dogs name, however this never even crossed my mind when we named him!

How important is it really to have “matching” names?

We have a dog called Digby - I do think of it as a dog name, probably because of this:

One of my kids is named after my Aunties dog. When I see his name mentioned on MN as being a dogs name I can't deny they have a point 😂😂. (It's not Fido!)

I think matching names is weird but it seems a really common thing to do. We just chose the names we liked. I'd avoid rhyming names or names that sound daft together but that's about it.

Digby is a perfectly fine, normal name. It's not as though you have called them Jane and Sparklepants.

I think Digby is a cool name!

I also gave my dc names I liked rather than names that 'match'. I don't think it matters personally.

I like it, I think Digby sounds cool. My DCs names don't match DD has a beautiful and somewhat classic name my DS has a very American name that you either like or don't. In fact someone told my DF that it sounded like am American porn stars name!

Thanks all! My DS is called Digby (be nice!) and I love it. We liked the whole “nickname” name trend ie. Alfie, Archie etc but wanted it to be a full name. I didn’t realise how marmite it would be!

I wouldn't worry. It's such an emotional thing chosing names for your children, and it is your choice. I did feel bad for a little while as DS couldn't pronounce his name when he was very little (and people weren't used to hearing it so they assumed that they had misheard him and 'gave' him a name they had heard of). Now he's a little older he loves having a name that is a bit unusual. DD on the other hand has a more mainstream name as that was the only one that both DH and I could agree on. They sound okay together off the tongue and both names were ones that DH and I felt attached to somehow.

I don't think it's important to have matching names. In fact if Mamés are too matching then they can sound terrible.

Not going to be very good at answering this but in my opinion if you like a name then use it. Personally I do sound names out with my other two kids names but sometimes I do think I'm being daft to miss out on names I like because it doesn't match the other two or isn't biblical like there's. So in a nutshell I think if you don't care if it matches then don't worry about it

Names don't have to match. Unless your boy is called Fido then these people are idiots.
