Malin for a girl?

Is this a bit ‘out there’ or too different? (I don’t know any youngsters with the name)

I’m half Danish, so the scandi link means it’s not completely odd, and I’ve always been a fan or the name. But I’d like honest opinions...

I quite liked it but a couple of years ago there was Malin in Love Island and everyone called her Ma, like Nick Cotton used to say it in Eastenders. The shortening put me right off the name.

I've met two Malin's - in the north Highlands so we already have a strong scandi influence. I love it, and never known either lass to have issues on meeting new people's pronunciation

I like it, and there's a character in a Zelda game named Malin ( I would pronounce it like Talinn (English pronunciation, not Estonian!)

It's my DD's middle name, love it. But we spelt it Marlin Blush. Gets lots of compliments, clearly people we met are too kind to correct us!

No not necessary but generally. If I heard someone describe a child as malin I would think they were being a bit negative.

No it's not necessarily negative. Depends on context. I'd use it when I wanted to say quick witted in English.

In general use in French it's more negative than that though, isn't it, Wallywobbles ? More like sly or mean.

I like it. My first thought was the Malin Fors series of books. It's unusual but not too out-there, it's easy to spell, it flows nicely and sounds feminine without being too flowery. I can't think of anything negative.

Not neard it before but its lovely. Being unfamilar with it if i saw it written down i would have thought it was pronounced to rhyme with Tallin.

It's fine. I think it's really nice. I knew immediately it was a Scandi name, so I didn't make any connection with the French meaning - and I'm a French speaker.

I’m depressingly not bilingual, so no negative connotations. I think it’s pretty, and unusual, and just thought of the actress Malin Ackerman Smile

I would pronounce it ‘morlin’. I know two and they pronounce it this way.

I only know 1, a 5 year old boy, named after the shopping area, where his father was taught to sail, by his father.

But it still makes me think of the Malin (May Lynne) Bridge part of Sheffield.
