Malin for a girl?

Is this a bit ‘out there’ or too different? (I don’t know any youngsters with the name)

I’m half Danish, so the scandi link means it’s not completely odd, and I’ve always been a fan or the name. But I’d like honest opinions...

I like it. But I used to work with someone from Sweden with the same name, so I have some context with it being used as a first name.

How about Malina instead of Malin, it's not too far off and sounds a bit more complete iyswim.

I love it. Worked with a fab Finnish Swede or Swedish Finn (can’t remember) by that name.

Too out there for me, sounds too made up for my part of the uk I'm afraid, but we aren't that cosmopolitan in Yorkshire.

Beautiful! I flatshared with a really nice Swedish girl called Malin, many years ago. And have had a crush on the name ever since!

@HolyShmoly thank you. I don’t watch Love Island, nor anyone that I know... I had to google it! 😂 So in a year or so I should think it will lose such connotations as is the nature of popular culture. I’ll monitor the name’ popularity in that waiting period nonetheless.

Malin Head is the tippy top of Ireland, and quite close to where I'm from so it would feel a bit like calling my child Portsmouth to me. But if you don't have that association it's not an ugly name. I don't think it deserves some of the comments on here, imo.
I do think that you'll probably get a few Love Island comments though, or at least people might assume that's where you've heard it.

I like it a lot. A friend's DD has it as her middle name cos she was listening to the shipping forecast during the birth!

I'd say it was easy to pronounce because I hear it on the Shipping Forecast. I like it.

I love it!

I considered it for my daughter (I have Danish background too, so also liked the Scandi connection) but it's quite similar to how my own name sounds at the start and didn't want people thinking I was trying to give DD a "mini-me" name. I ended up going for another 5-letter 'M' name that ends with n as well.

I liked it until I read what the word means in French and that completely changed my mind. It’s a bit like really liking the name Suka then finding out that in another language it is really unpleasant (it is ‘bitch’ in Polish). Once you know that there is another meaning in a different language (and one the child is not unlikely to come into contact with) you look at it differently.

I like it. I didnt think of any associations to do with fish, shipping forecasts, Marlon Brando or Maid Marion. But then I like unusual names and Scandinavia.

I think very few people would make any french association and I think its pretty rude to tell someone that a well known name from their country is a bad/stupid choice.

I really like the ‘Morlen’ pronunciation...I think that’s how my grandmother would say it as well, should check with my mum.

I knew a Scandi girl this name and pronounced it Marlin ... at first i thought of the fish but after 2/3 times it was just her name. I like it
