How long was your new born nameless?

And why?

My friend had baby 5 weeks ago and has no idea what to name her. Her older daughter has an unusual name and wants similar for this one. She has to register by June 1st!

DD had a different name for the first 24 hours or so. It had been our number one choice but we both felt it didn't suit her. We chose a different name and we're very happy that we did. Name one wouldn't have been right for her.

Both mine were named before they were born, DC1 had a name when we found out he was a boy, DC2 had the first name picked for girl or boy when we found out I was pregnant and added the middle name when I knew she was a girl

About 3 hours. We had a shortlist of 4 names and I rejected 2 when I saw him. Dh chose from the 2 left as I couldn't decide. Middle name was already chose.

Ds1 named from around 20wks
Ds2 around 4 weeks old as there were no names I liked and I thought if I was going to have an epiphany it would have happened by then. I still don't particularly like the name we chose but still haven't heard of one I would prefer and ds2 is now nearly 10wks old. I still refer to him as the baby as I can't get used to his name but that's for another thread!

Both were born in the evening and named the following morning. In both cases though we had shortlists. It took us 5 days to decide on DS2's middle name though (much, much longer than I liked but DH was dragging his heels!)

Both unintentionally had names before birth. They were the only names we could agree on and it just kind of happened.

We did with DS2 trial another name for a day, he really suited it but I felt pretentious calling him it in the end, as it’s very Italian and we are so far from Italian!

5 days with DD. She was in intensive care, very poorly. I didn't name her until she started to pull through. It felt like tempting fate to name her before that (irrational as that sounds).

It's not like having a baby is a surprise to most people is it? Grin

A few hours with DC1. I had him just after midnight & he had a name by breakfast time. We'd no boys' names in advance as I was so sure I was having a girl.

The other two were named well before they were born as we knew the sex in advance.

Mine were all named before birth (and luckily all suited the names we picked)

We didn't know gender with DC1 though but only had a name for a boy. If he'd been a girl then he'd have been nameless for a while. Took us about 4 months to decide on our DC2 and 3 names (both girls and we knew sex)

We decided on a name before he was born, but then I went off it because I could only picture it suiting a child with a very particular colouring and appearance. When he arrived, that was exactly what he looked like, so he got his name instantly!

Mine were all named right away. We had one boy and one girl name and picked accordingly.

40 days, we had our appointment at the registry office so that was the deadline to make our minds up!

DC1 named straightaway - we already had a favorite name and she suited it so was very quick decision.
DC2 born in the morning and named in the evening. We didn't have any clear favorites so would have probably been happy to give it a couple of days to see what he suited but family were nagging for a name!

My first I had already decided before he was born and my second we registered him the day before the 6 weeks was up, and was still deliberating whilst waiting to be called up.

Two weeks. We had two first names we both liked equally so spent a while trying them out.

5 days. None of the names on our list suited her, took a few days of trying her name out with various middle names before we were happy.

As soon as she was born, we both instantly knew what to name her. We didn't know if she was a boy or girl before hand and had about 5 names each to chose from. She just looked like that name straight away. I hate all the other names now!! Husband let me chose her middle name since I'd gone through the labour and I chose what I always had wanted!
