Blossom or Dolly

My friend has a dolly but it’s a shortened version of something else, so she has a bit more flex should she prefer it when older

I had such stick from people when we named her - but honestly she loves her name , everyone comments on her name ... she is in secondary school is a very sociable , compassionate young lady with lots of friends and is politically aware , assertive and i could not ask for a happier more well adjusted daughter.

If you like it - do it - dont ask for opinions , i never did and she has never once had anyone bully or laugh at her name .

Yes to Holly, Polly, Molly or Flora. Much better. Goes better with Heidi too.

You could maybe consider other names that sound almost the same as Dolly, without the demeaning and sexist "cuteness", in my opinion, of Dolly. Holly, Polly, Molly are very similar but different names. Blossom translates as Flower in lots of languages - from which you get very established names such as Fleur or Flora . Interesting that they don't seem as cow-like - quite the opposite, in fact. Posy is another possibility, perhaps.

@ellalouise90 I like both. Dolly is actually my cars name, I think it's a really sweet name. Blossom to me I associate with the 90's tv programme and really like, I think it's a better middle name though. For example India Blossom.

I'd go with Dolly.

For those saying they'd be bullied for their name, is this really a thing? I was told this if I called my child Luna ( had a boy so was moot point) our children will be in a class of Hunters, Foxes, Romans, Roccos and Honeys. Not Donnas, Staceys, and Denises. It's a different generation!

They're not "boardroom names" are they but each to their own. I marginally prefer Blossom because Dolly is...well, a dolly.

How about Dolores and nickname dolly

I'm not keen as I think of a calf if I hear it.

I personally don't understand why people associate the name 'blossom' with a cow?

In 1796 Edward Jenner used a cow called Blossom in his famous smallpox research. This is the research that lead to the eventual eradication of smallpox btw.

His work was very famous and the name “Blossom the cow” entered the national consciousness. There have been other famous Blossom the cows since.

And of course I presume you are aware of Dolly the cloned sheep?

Thea is an absolutely gorgeous name though and would work very well with Heidi.

I think Dolores is totally awesome if a bit hipster alternative though and would hush the naysayers if you wanted a longer more official name, Dolly totally flows as a nickname. One of my daughters has a really unusual known as nickname and an even more unusual full name that she is never known as, not even in school, but I do like that she has the longer name to chose if she wishes when older for job applications and if she wants a different nickname.

Dolly. I quite like Blossom but it does sound more out there and not quite marching with Heidi which is a top 50 name. Dolly sounds quite retro. I do know two Dolly's. One is a baby and one is a 10 year old.

I think they're both pretty frightful, honestly, and please don't kid yourself that they will sound "normal" by the time your child is an adult. Very very few people give their children names like this and I would be fantastically resentful if my parents named me Blossom or Dolly.

Heidi is a lovely name--why not choose something similar in style?

OP I know what u r saying and I agree that it’s disgraceful that people might discriminate because of a name but, as u can see from this thread, some people would. You can’t change them but if it bothers you you can use a slightly more conventional name (could still be unusual but one that wouldn’t raise so many eyebrows). There’s also a lot of people who wouldn’t discriminate too tho so it’s totally your choice.

Heidi’s great but Blossom and Dolly are names I’d consider for a goat. There are plenty of names that work for humans that still have a nice sound and age well.

Blossom and Dolly are both utterly silly names. Don’t do this to your kid. Especially as Heidi is actually a perfectly fine name so your kids won’t even share in the misery together.
