I met a baby Tulia (pronounced as Julia but with a ‘T/Ch’ sound) four or five years ago and have always remembered it as a great sounding name.

I like Julia too, it seems very cheerful. I also know a July, which I like (although a bit weird if you’re not born in July I guess, and a bit literal if you are).

While there were a lot of Julie's growing up in the 70's there are no young ones now. Julia is lovely and I think travels well/ used in Europe and Russia. I do love Juliet thought too.

The asking for trouble bit is pretty much what I've had with my name over the years, so you have a good point. Thalia is nice but would probably get the same. Nuria I've never heard of!

I have a little Julia and it's great for reasons already posted. Easy to say and spell, familiar but not over used, and quite timeless. With her siblings she sounds quite Edwardian though, not that that's particularly a bad thing. It's the name I've had the most positive comments about of all my kids.

Julia is lovely and is making a bit of a comeback. 2 yr old DS has a new friend called Julia and I thought it was awesome. Tulia is just asking for trouble.

Tulia doesn't meet your 'normal but underused' criteria as it is pretty unheard of and will generate a lot of query so if you want to avoid that, Julia it is.

I agree - Thalia in Greek (the original) is THAH- lee- ah or THAH-lya.

If it matters, Cicero's daughter Tullia did not die as a child, she died after childbirth.
There is a very famous story about her tomb being discovered hundreds of years after she died, and a beautiful poem about it. Both here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tullia_(daughter_of_Cicero)

Cicero's family/clan name was 'Tullius'. Hence Tullia, the feminine form.

You really can't believe what you read in a lot of name books.
However, in Spanish and I think Portuguese, there is a modern version of the Latin name, spelled with one 'l', pronounced 'TOO-lee-ah'.

Thalia - in Latin would be 'Tah-lee-ah'; in English it's usually the same, too. In Spanish (and German) it's 'Tah-LEE-a'

Thalia is a Muse, pronounced Thalia. There are other names pronounced Talia but there is no logic in Talia for Thalia.

In Greek, Thalia is pronounced with the 'th' sound at the beginning, so Tha-leah

I would wonder if Tulia was a typo for Julia or Tulip.

Much prefer Julia. It's not old-fashioned, it's a classic name which everybody knows how to pronounce and how to spell. No known bad assocations to my knowledge.

I know a Tulia too. I much prefer it to Julia, which i think sounds a bit dated
