I’ve a 19 year old one and he’s always had compliments about his name. He was named after the tree.

My daughter has a fairly popular ‘old lady’ name (think Florence,Elsie,Martha,Edie...) is Rowan too modern? I know they don’t have to match but I don’t want them to sound weird together

I like this name. It feels a little earthy and nature-y. I keep seeing this name popping up on name forums and mums groups, so it must be getting more popular. I def think of it as a boy and not a girl, however it seems to be rising in popularity for girls, so possibly will become a unisex name in the future.

I know a few Rowans (men, no boys), one Rowena and one Rowenna. And one boy Rowen who will spend his life explaining his parents' love of yooneek . Rowan's a fab name!

There is always Rowena, which apparently has completely different roots from Rowan, but sounds quite similar.

Rowan makes me think of Marlow, Morrison and Atkinson in that order. I prefer it to Rowena.

I teach a Roman who I (secretly) really really like. He’s a bit of a rebel/teenage grump but in a one to one situation is a really nice kid! I’d happily call my kid Rowan but DH vetoed it (and so many other names, both being teachers is a nightmare)

I like it pronounced to rhyme with how not hoe (more usual pronunciation in Scotland until Rowan Atkinson got famous). I think of it as a nature name so (other) girls' names that feel similar are things like Hazel, Fern, Briony.

Nature names - Holly, Hazel (although it would perhaps be a bit much). Strong, short and not overly flowery names - perhaps Erin, Lucy, Eve, Clara, Anna.

Like it. One of very few truly unisex names (i.e. which work equally well for a girl and a boy, although I think I prefer it for a boy).

I have a second cousin called Rowan - the only one I've ever known. Never have associated it with a girls name.

Thank you everyone. Think I’m going to add it to the list (If you can call a piece of paper with ROWAN written on it a list,that is?) despite the Bean/Girl/Archbishop issues it’s still appealing to me

It’s the name I’ve chosen for my baby boy expected v soon (spelt Roan though)
