Do you prefer Mary or Marie?
I really don't like Maria so that's not even going to be considered!

I love Mary. As someone upthread says being Irish I have several Aunt Mary's (2 blood relations, 2 by marriage!) so I can't use it really. But if I was in England without a huge glut of Mary's in my life I would!

Interesting article here.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 18/05/2018 11:22

Marie is pretty !

Buxbaum · 18/05/2018 11:13

Sorry, I should have said England, not the UK - although I also have family in north Wales and have never heard it there!

Buxbaum · 18/05/2018 10:53

I don’t think of Marie as modern at all. I know several in their 40s and 50s so I classify it alongside Susan, Carol, Sandra etc. I think it’s a generation away from sounding fresh again. I do know a very cool 20-something Mairi, however.

Conversely, I know a couple of elderly Marys (80+) and one lovely teenage one. I’ve heard the vagina slang on MN but I’ve lived in the south east, north west, and Midlands of the UK and never heard anyone use it. Perhaps it’s a regional or generational thing.

starkid · 18/05/2018 10:41

Both quite sweet, but Marie has the edge for me

vampirethriller · 18/05/2018 09:30

I love Mary but have heard the vagina thing too and it put me off. Maria is nicer than Marie, it's on my list!

Kokeshi123 · 18/05/2018 02:18

I like both, but Mary is best.

Everexpandingwaistline · 17/05/2018 04:12

Mary but prefer Maria as it sounds a little more classier like Anna instead of Anne.

RedDwarves · 17/05/2018 03:56

Mary.

I'm relatively young and I'd much rather be called Mary than Marie. I disagree that Marie is more modern.

buttercup54321 · 17/05/2018 03:41

Marie.
I work with a girl called Marietta

RavenWings · 17/05/2018 00:06

Mary. No contest imo.

spottydott · 16/05/2018 23:14

I think I'm in the minority but prefer Marie!

Sophronia · 16/05/2018 22:36

Mary, but Marie is nice too.

Ragusa · 16/05/2018 22:32

I like Marie and have not met a single child called this for years and years. I like it probounced boh ways, M'ree or Mah-ree.

annandale · 16/05/2018 22:32

Definitely Mary. Super traditional, cool and attractive.

chezmk1988 · 16/05/2018 22:28

Marie

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 16/05/2018 22:15

My daughter is called Mary. Never had any vagina related comments ( or anything else). Ever.

bridgetreilly · 16/05/2018 22:15

Mary.

I've heard the slang but only on Mumsnet. I wouldn't let it worry me.

TatianaLarina · 16/05/2018 22:06

I’d think quite a lot of people would. I’m surprised you haven’t heard it tbh.

GrannyHaddock · 16/05/2018 22:04

There are plenty of variants of Mary: Maura, Mariella, Maryam. Look on Nameberry. If it is really just between those two, I would go for Marie.

MrsCD67 · 16/05/2018 22:01

I really don't think it's something many people would think of when hearing the name...it's not like Fanny!

gruffalopuffalo · 16/05/2018 21:57

That's a new one on me too!

MrsCD67 · 16/05/2018 21:44

@tatianalarina
I've never heard of it as slang for vagina!
