Opinions on Avalon?

Opinions on the name Avalon for a girl? Do you think people would mispronounce it?
Middle name would be Stella, Jo or Grace.

I quite like it too. Tara is a place name as is Eden.
But it would cause comment if that's an issue.

But... do bear in mind that most of our references are British and the name might 'sound' quite different in Australia.

I have a great aunt called Avalon, and it's the name of a suburb/beach in Sydney, which on your update, I see you mentioned. I'm in Australia, so it would remind me of the suburb/beach instantly.

Despite both of those things, I don't like the name.

I used to know a girl called Avalon. She spent all of her high schools being tormented and called Savalon. Poor girl absolutely hated her name.

I know how to pronounce Avalon (as shown just above), was playing with the word in an effort to describe why it doesn't sounds like a person's name to me.

Marlon is a name with a 'lon' sound but I can't think of another.

@lottiegarbanzo Marion is a name with an on on the end. No one thinks that isn’t a name. It’s Av-ah-lon, to rhyme with have-a-lon, not Ayva-lon like Ava

How about Aurora? Has similar 'positive, mystical, nature' properties.

I'm trying to think of words ending in -lon e.g. pylon, nylon, Revlon and all are things or brand names. Bit like -tron. 'The Ava-tron' 'The Ava-lon'. Tron is a robot, lon a synthetic household product.

I think it's the 'on' part that makes it sound odd as a name for a person. Brings Savlon (aniseptic cream) and Avon (cosmetics) to mind.

Have of course heard of Avalon the mystical place. Never as a name for a person. Morgan is a strong name.

As a name, sounds similar to Evelyn, which is lovely.

How would anyone mispronounce it? Ava-lon? Ava is a nicer name.

Don’t really see how it could be mispronounced, especially if it’s an area near you.
Sounds like some people haven’t heard it before, which surprises me.

No associations with antiseptic here....

I love it - would think of the song or legend. Didn't even consider it sounding like Savlon until I read it here! I wouldn't worry about that too much.

If you're not in the UK it may work better. I live near Glastonbury. There are lots of bungalows with the name, a school, a charity and several businesses.

I'm surprised people hate the name so much. My only worry was it being maybe too mystical due to the King Arthur connection or too beachy (I live in Sydney, where there is an area called Avalon Beach).

I pronounce it pretty much somewhere between A-vuh-lon and A-va-lon (A like in cat). I love strong names which is probably why I like Avalon so much. DD1 has a strong name also. Struggling to find ones I really love, thought I had found it when I thought of Avalon but back to the drawing board considering how much everyone hates it I guess. Hmm

I think it sounds really weird as a name for a person, tbh. Stella is a gorgeous name. Go for that instead.

Just realised you said girl. So many strong and beautiful female names from the Arthurian legend if you have a google.

It's more of a place name imo, but if you are from the Glastonbury area it would work. Boy or girl? There are other names connected to the Arthurian legend that could work better, Morgan, Morgana, Morgaine, Arthur, Uther, Talis, Gawain, Percival, to name just a few.
