Well we've finally decided on a name for our little girl x Laura, what does everyone think when they hear it

It’s my name I’ve always liked it. Don’t know about it being a common name like Sharon or Karen as pp have said Hmm. I remember always the only one of that name in my school and at college.

It's my name, and my middle name is one that's already been mentioned up thread twice Wink.

I wasn't a huge fan of it when I was younger as it wasn't as out there as I thought I was (!) but I love it as an adult. It's got literary references, it's pretty, it's pronounceable and, as someone who has wound up in an industry that's very global for work, it's a name that international colleagues don't struggle with! I'd definitely use it for a daughter if it wasn't my name.

Wow thank you all for your replies, I wasn't expecting this response.
I'm glad as it's mostly seen as a positive name, wanted something 'normal' but classic.
We loved emma but it's shot up at the moment so was looking at similar names and my little boy cake out with it out of the blue and insisted we called her that and it's really grown on us.

Yes trying to find a middle name, we're not using family names as there are so many and I don't want to leave anyone out.

Out of the suggestion I loved Juliet as a first name but worried it'd be shortened to Julie but I think it could work well as a middle name, also like Jane xx

Love Laura, it's classy and pretty. Best of all I think it'll be quite a rare choice nowadays.

In German Laura is pronounced Lau (rhyme with cloud) ra. Like Claudia (cloud) or Auch.

It's such a different name from Lauren or Lara. I like both but still perceive Lauren as a 'fresh' modern American import and Lara as romantic and Russian.

Laura has a much longer heritage, whether or not you want to call it classic.

It would be Laaawra (like “allow”) in some other languages like Spanish. I don’t think people would mispronounce it in the UK though.

It’s quite an 80s sort of name in the UK but I have met little French Lauras.

I wouldn’t let that put you off OP, because it’s still a pretty name and I don’t think names like Laura, Claire, Sarah etc will ever really date like Janet and Susan and Carol have.

Tumbleted, if you say 'Lowra', but you'd doom your child to a life of mispronunciation if you did that in the UK.

Hugely disagree that it's like Lorraine or Sharon. I think it is a really classic name. My Nan, in her nineties is called Laura.

I'm a 35yo Laura Jane and I grew up hating how boring my name was.

That was entirely due to its popularity though so I'm sure today I would probably like it.

I'm not a fan, personally. It still seems quite outdated to me, and not the "classic" others on this thread are claiming it to be. Classics are never out of fashion, but Laura has had a burst in popularity, followed by a steep decline, which makes it more cyclical and less classic.

I prefer Lauren, though think that is still outdated too.

I really like Laura.
My DD also has a classic name that was very popular 20 years ago but not now. Everyone always comments on how it's a lovely name but not very common now. I love how she will be the only one in her class, but not because it's an odd name! Also everyone knows how to spell it!
