You could always spell it like that.
To a PP I prefer Ben spelt as Bean myself! Grin

Sorry to answer a question, I particularly like the pronunciation Ann - Ace which is why I thought it might be clearer with the E on the end

It's An-eye-eece (the last bit rhymes with 'fleece').

Indeed it is a name, albeit probably not the French name we all know from the perfume! I do take the point that it may be setting her up for a lifetime of correcting pronunciation!

Anaise is pronounced 'An-ay-zee'

Anais is pronounced 'An-eye-iss'.

So two totally different names: pick whatever you prefer. Or better, consider something more straightforward that won't lead to a lifetime of mispronunciation and misspelling.

I think you are letting her in for a lifetime of telling people how to spell it (and then explaining why she’s spelling it wrong) and how to pronounce it (accepting that many people will not remember even after being told). If you’re OK with that then go ahead. For the record, I live in France where it is spelt Anaïs and pronounced Ann-eye- eese - reasonably common here. Lovely name.

All I can think of with Anais is that perfume from the 80s/90s.
We all called it "Anay-Anay" till we learnt the proper posh way and then pretended we knew it was "an-eye-eess-an-eye-eess" all along.

But op are you just going for a different spelling or do you also want a different pronunciation?

The way you've spelled it means it will be pronounced differently from the original name Anais (an-eye-ees). If you want an-eye-ees then you need to spell it correctly.

Afaik there is no such name as "a-nace" (which is how your spelling would be pronounced), so you'd be making up a name that is confusingly similar to another one. People would likely assume you just couldn't spell and/or pronounce Anais.

Either way it's a lifetime of frustration for your daughter.

Love the Ben/Been analogy from the pp!

I really like it but when I suggested it to my DH he very quickly pointed out how much it sounds like anus and could open up a whole potential mess of name calling. Kids are cruel and I couldn't do that to my child.

Changing the spelling changes how a word is pronounced, and that's going to cause even more confusion with a name where the pronunciation can cause confusion anyway.

You wouldn't call your son Ben but spell it Been.

They aren't the dickheads and making up your own spelling of a name isn't "going for something different". If you want your kid to have a lifetime of having her name spelled wrong (actually right) and people assuming her parents were unable to look it up and get it right in the first place, then go ahead.

It’s Anais and pronounced An-eye-ees. It’s a lovely name, though not one I’d choose personally. You would be explaining the pronounciation to people, but once they’ve got it they’ll be fine.
