Opinions on the name Molly?

We are thinking of the name Molly for our little girl due next month. I like the Irish connotations as we both have strong Irish links & I think it's a name that will travel well. So Mumsnet how would you imagine a little Molly to be like?

Another Irish person for whom Molly doesn't sound very Irish to!

It's a bit insipid to me - just personal taste, I don't like nicknames-as-full-names.

I'd prefer Nora, Bridget (Bridie) or Sarah (Sadie)

I agree with people saying it's wet and meek. As an Irish person it doesn't say Irish to me either, aside from Molly Malone.

I personally wouldn't choose it, but that's because it falls into the nickname-as-only-name for me (e.g. Freddie not Frederick, or Charlie not Charles, or Harry not Henry). But I recognise that's my issue and a lot of people don't feel that way.

Whilst I think it is quite child-like as a name, I actually think it is totally fine as an adult strong woman name - I can quite imagine a High Court Judge as a Molly.

Love it.

"Molly" is more common is America I think. People I've known all call MDMA "Mandy" which makes way more sense anyway.

I have one now17 and I have loved it at every age. And for those who say it's not a serious name she is head of 6th form and studying chemistry, biology and history. She's applying for pharmacy. I think she'll go far being a Molly. Such a kind friendly name.

Molly holds a dear place in my heart. It was my Grandmother's name, who was a lovely lady. It's also a name I would consider using for any future daughters I may have (fingers crossed!)

I think it's such a sweet little name for a young girl but it also works on an adult too.

Mad, a lot of names that people would have said were awful a few years ago have come back into fashion now.

Margaret is wonderfully jolie-laide and has tons of great nickname options.

Personally I don't like the letters or the way it sounds, although I have known some nice Mollys.

It’s OK but it doesn’t sound like a very “serious” name.

I would go for Mary or Margaret (love Margaret and think it’s very elegant and underused) with Molly as a nickname.

I don't know anyone, children or adult, called molly in Ireland - it must have become unfashionable. I had an aunty Molly, I like it, it's be on my shortlist for a girl!

I like it a lot, although I do prefer Polly.

I know a couple of adult Mollys, and had a great grandmother named Molly. Also, there's Molly Weasley, who's a great (adult!) literary namesake.

Molly is a pet form of Mary in Ireland.

What Irish connection does Molly have? Confused Other than the Molly Malone song of course, but that doesn't make it an Irish name. I suppose as it's a diminutive for Mary & there are loads of Marys in Ireland that could be a connection too.

I think it's a very twee name that's OK on a toddler but doesn't sound very grown up.

Its a fanmily name for me and dh, with Mollys on from all generations. I love it. Our Mollys have been/are strong clever one isn't quite a high court judge but is a highly repected barrister and it never held her back!

It's one of the many diminutives for Margaret.
Apply the high court judge test.
