Starting to think of names for our little girl, currently 35 weeks. What are all of your opinions of the name Naomi? I love it but have had mixed reactions from friends/family

Where i am from (CI) most pronounce it with the stress on the "o"

i.e. Nay - OH - mi

Very pretty name which I've not heard in ages

I love it but there may be some pronunciation issues. I forgot whether it’s a ‘nigh’ or ‘nay’ sound.

One I knew at uni used to be Nomes.

So basically, Gnomes!

Used to get a few confused looks initially.

My name is Naomi and I pronounce it Neigh-omi. I also get called Neigh-umi, Nigh-omi and various other wonderful mispronunciations by children: shu-shomi, bi-moni, mo-romi.

I love my name and don't bother correcting anyone as they're all similar enough. I don't like it being shortened to Nome much though. And the constant misspellings are a pain but they fizzled out a lot once I left school.

Go for it OP (though I am biased!)

I love it. To be honest I think the two different pronunciations are similar enough to just live with - I know a Naomi who doesn't bother correcting people (she does however get a lot of strange spellings of it!)

Yeah, I also know someone who spells his name Rueben because his parents couldn’t spell properly.

I know someone who pronounces it Nyomi and it's her own name! Yes I would absolutely expect some people to pronounce it that way. I didn't think that was unusual? And yes there's also the stress on either first or secodn syllable issue.

But most people I think would say it Nay-OH-mi.

You’d think so, Gasp0de, but my friend Naomi gets called Nyomi a surprising amount. She says it sounds like a brand of surgical stockings or the latest health food craze you’d find on the shelves next to the quinoa.

Naomi is a lovely name though, and not dated.

Lovely name. Nothing whatsoever dated or boring about it. It's been used since biblical times and I expect it will still be in use for many hundreds of years to come, long after some of the made up names currently in vogue are forgotten.

Not getting where the Nyomi pronunciation is coming from. I hear it pronounced in two different ways, and the difference is where the stress is put. It can either be NAYomi or NayOHmi, can't it?

I do think it’s worth recognising that Ny-oh-mi is a reasonably common mispronunciation though - you should be comfortable with the fact many people will mispronounce it!

Much like naming your child Theo in south Essex...

Ha, I wish I could say I speak fluent Japanese but I don’t. It is Nay-Oh-Mi in English too though.

Ny-oh-mi is just a mispronunciation.

I like the Ny-OH-mee pronunciation, not so much the NAY-uh-mee one (and didn't even know it was Japanese until now, so had never thought about the Nao-mi option, as odd as that sounds).
