Positive boost for our chosen name please

'Violet'

Feeling a bit down and pathetic and need a boost.

Family have made it clear they don't like our chosen name. I ignored it at first but it is increasingly hard. New suggestions are constantly thrown at me. I too had doubts about it, but DP wouldn't budge and my favourite name changes weekly. The name doesn't fit with family tradition of having long girls names, and as pointed out by mumsnet it is apparently very popular (unusual names are in my family). From all the arguing the name has sort of stuck and now I'd regret not using it in the future.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the name at the start. It was one of 4 names agreed by me and DP (Jennifer, Elizabeth, Lucy, Violet - also Katherine somewhat). I love how it looks and sounds, and out of all floral names this is the only one I'd consider using.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am fine with people disliking the name, in fact when I posted here originally a lot of people hated it but we went with it anyway! Baby due anytime now and I just need a little positive boost or slap to get these hormones in place.

I'm going to go against the grain.

I don't think you love the name and I think the driver here is your rather bullying sounding DP.

I'm probably slightly swayed by the fact that I am not a major fan of Violet, I think it's very harsh. And Vi is not great. I prefer any of the other names you mention.

I think you should have a good think about the other names you love and a strong word with your DP (who, as you are not married, can't register the name himself anyway!)

I hope you're giving the baby your surname?

BringMeCoffeePlease · 23/04/2018 13:25

What you call your baby is up to you and your DP. Your parents or anyone else don’t get to decide what name you use. If you both love it, go for it.

Violet is lovely. It's a flower name without being overly cutesy. Yes it's rising in popularity but I doubt it'll be a name where there are several in a class

FairyFantastic · 23/04/2018 12:14

Thank you all. Woken up feeling a bit achey (at that stage where every little pain makes me wonder when labour will be!) but your messages have cheered me up. Feeling much better than last night.

I love it. My granny was Violet and was a wonderful woman. I wanted to use it for DD4 but DH wasn't keen.

RLOU88 · 23/04/2018 11:09

I love it! If I wasn’t having a boy I would actually take it and use it myself Grin

glitterbiscuits · 23/04/2018 11:06

It’s lovely. Please use it!

minipie · 23/04/2018 11:02

It's lovely! And it is long (three syllables!) unusual (I've only met one) and traditional (been around for donkeys) - so it ticks all your family's boxes anyway.

My mum was rather negative about our chosen name for DD2 - and for a while that took the shine off it for me - but I've had so many other positive comments about it that I fell back in love with it again.

Elllicam · 23/04/2018 10:56

Very pretty name, unusual without being weird.

Weezol · 23/04/2018 10:53

Swish 'May' is my DCats' middle name. It's the one bit of her previous (truly awful) name that I kept when I adopted her Blush.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 23/04/2018 09:11

OP after reading your title I was fully expecting an awful name! But Violet is gorgeous Flowers. It’s not common but not crazy out there and like a PP said is the colour of suffragettes and therefore even more awesome!

So ignore your family and listen to us instead Wink

RidingWindhorses · 23/04/2018 09:11

Genuinely one of my favourite names. Ignore your family - they have poor taste. Who cares what they think?

fleshmarketclose · 23/04/2018 09:06

I like it a lot and have a rather elderly Auntie Violet who is just lovely so lots of positive association with me.

sashh · 23/04/2018 09:03

I love it.

I read about Violette Szabo when I was 11 and loved all forms of the name since (Violette had a cousin Violet).

Have a read about Violet Tillard, your daughter couldnt share a name with a more compassionate human being.

katmarie · 23/04/2018 07:27

We were going to use it for a girl, as it's my mums middle name, I think it's really lovely x

witherwings · 23/04/2018 07:19

I love it. I don’t know any other children with the name in our fairly large primary school. Also there are several nickname options from it when your daughter gets older and wants to exert some choice.
It’s not your family’s choice and besides, they may not like it now but they will love your child and it will grow on them

Swishswish26 · 23/04/2018 07:07

Violet is a lovely name, in fact it is my daughter’s middle name. Whenever she tells everyone her full name people always comment on it saying how beautiful it is. Lots of her friends have the middle name ‘May/Mae/Mai’ for some reason. I’d prefer to be a bit different.

Notso · 23/04/2018 07:04

I love the name Violet, it's beautiful. There's one in my family with the nickname Vee which I also love.

littlebillie · 23/04/2018 07:02

It's a grown up name and not twee I like it

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 23/04/2018 06:52

Lovely name

BertrandRussell · 23/04/2018 06:48

It's a lovely name. But you need to just check how it will be pronounced by your families/people in the area where you live- in some accents it will automatically be Vi-let. And do you like Vi? If you're OK with both then go ahead!

AuntieStella · 23/04/2018 06:40

It's a brilliant name (we have one in the extended family)

Littlemum2be86 · 23/04/2018 06:38

My niece is called Violet and I really think it is a beautiful name! She is a gorgeous little thing and the prettiness of the name really suits her. I am currently 37 weeks pregnant with DD and I would have loved to have used it if my sister hadn’t nabbed it!

Great name choice OP Smile

Thishatisnotmine · 23/04/2018 03:00

My dm hated the name, still does. She refused to csll dd Violet, wouldn't tell people what she was called. I was very upset about it.

It's a lovely name (although I would say that!) and we get nothing but positive comments on how nice it is. Also, when dd was tod that the pretty little flowers growing along our path were Violets she was delighted!

If you have a second child in the future never discuss names with family or friends before the birth. It makes things so much easier!

pilotswife · 23/04/2018 02:52

It is beautiful, I’d love a Violet !
