For a girl that is, as I've occasionally heard these names used on boys.

Erin is much nicer. I always loved it and wanted it for a baby name myself but DP's surname ruled that out (rhymes).

stellinaa · 13/04/2018 11:52

Much prefer Jade, Erin also sounds harsh/ugly to my ears

squoosh · 13/04/2018 11:48

I think of Erin as being one of those slightly cheesy names that Irish Americans give their daughters. Similar vein to Colleen. I also think of oxtail powdered soup.

Better name out of Jade or Erin.

@MiaowTheCat I love your reasons! This is exactly how I feel about girls names and wanting to choose something that says "strong and independent" rather than "meek little flower" like a lot of the very girly names in fashion now. I love Erin and would go with this hands down. Unfortunately for me my DH says it doesn't go with our surname and has vetoed it Sad

Erin

pimlicolife · 12/04/2018 14:47

Erin. By a very long way. Jade's really dated badly.

TheKnackeredChef · 12/04/2018 14:40

Erin was going to be my name but somebody my mum knew had a baby the week before I was born and used that name, so they changed it at the last minute. My mum is wonderful in every other respect but I will never forgive her for this! I still think of Erin as being 'my' name.

xiKGx · 12/04/2018 14:31

Jade 100%

Frogletmamma · 12/04/2018 14:31

Look up jade in dictionary. Erin is smashing name though.

Copperbonnet · 12/04/2018 14:30

Who knew there were so many Waltons fans still out there! Grin

Freyanna · 12/04/2018 14:16

Copperbonnet Me too about The Waltons link! Erin was always my favourite character.

BringMeCoffeePlease · 12/04/2018 13:40

I adore Erin

Copperbonnet that is exactly why I love Erin, because of The Waltons, and in fact it was a favourite when we had our children many years ago but we had boys so didn't get to use it.

Copperbonnet · 12/04/2018 13:03

I think most people who prefer Erin prefer it because it's more middle class.

Nope, I prefer it because I first heard the name on The Waltons when I was a wee girl and thought it was a beautiful name.

Jade is pretty too but it’s a precious stone so I always feel it’s a “cold” name. I think Ruby and Amber are pretty too but wouldn’t use them for the same reason.

Probably true, as Jade actually sounds more feminine and prettier than Erin (which has a harsh sound imo).

DanceDisaster · 12/04/2018 11:23

No, I just think Erin is “the prettier name by miles”. Jade has an ugly, clunky sound to me (sorry to any Jades out there)! Erin has a nicer, flowing sound to me. Neither one is my favourite name in the world, but Erin is so much nicer to me.

I like other ‘hippy’, precious stone names though; Ruby, Sapphire, Opal, Pearl, Coral are all lovely.

Sorry to ramble, I just wouldn’t like people to assume I only said Erin because it’s more middle class.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 12/04/2018 11:19

Jade is dated but I think it's a lot nicer than Erin.

PetraRabbit · 12/04/2018 11:06

Jade is the prettier name by a mile. Originally a bit of a glamorous hippy name- Bianca Jagger used it. I think most people who prefer Erin prefer it because it's more middle class. It depends how much that matters to you. Erin is a plainer, more masculine name- but is fairly neutral to most people's taste.

Erin

greenhills2015 · 12/04/2018 09:39

Erin 100%, all Jades I've met have been very chavvy (sure there are some nice ones out there too)

DanceDisaster · 12/04/2018 09:36
