Dylan is very common around the Cardiff area and it’s never pronounced dull-an.

I’ve not heard it as dull- an and I live in South Wales - is that more of a north Wales pronunciation? Or maybe I’ve just not been listening properly!

I love it.

Unless you’re in Welsh or living in Wales, I see no reason to adopt the Welsh pronunciation. You would forever be saying, “I know it looks like it should be an “i” sound but it’s Welsh and they say it with a “u” sound. No, we’re not Welsh”

Or “I know it’s pronounced “Dullan” but it’s spelt “Dylan”. No we”re not Welsh”.

It is a mis pronounciation but I know lots of Welsh people who say Dill-an. I remember when I worked in Cardiff having a discussion with my colleagues who had never heard it pronounced ‘Dull-an’.

Dill-un isn't incorrect in the same way that Jen-ah-veev for Genevieve isn't incorrect. It's just not how it's pronounced in its native language. Woopdy-do.

I have a Dylan so obviously like it . I will say I get many variations on how it is spelt Dillon or Dylon. No idea why as we pronounce it Dill an

It's definitely pronounced Dil-an in our family, I've never heard anyone say Dull-an
Your family are pronouncing it wrongly. It's a Welsh name and a y makes a "uh" sound in Welsh.
Call him Dillan/Dillon if that's the sound you like.

@Gwenhwyfar, my experience differs from yours. That doesn't mean I'm incorrect.

If you have issue with those that I've met who spell and pronounce their children and themselves that then I suggest you correct all of them along with the many others who use this too Hmm

I absolutely love it, infact it was going to be ds name but everywhere we went during my pregnancy there were naughty Dylans with extremely loud mums yelling 'Dylan stop that now' 'Dylan come here now' etc.. in thé end I just couldn't do it.

Ironically ds should have been a Dylan as where ever we go he is the one misbehaving and I am the extremely load mum yelling '[ds name] come back now' '[ds name] stop doing that' Blush

I know a couple of middle aged Dylans pronounced Dillan although we are close to Wales. I like the name, both nice sensible blokes too.

I don’t like it but only because in the last 12 years, I’ve taught 5 boys called Dylan and they’ve all been little horrors. Sorry!
