Thoughts on Thomas/Tom?

What do you think of this name? Is it too popular? Too boring? Or classic and lovely?

Lovely wholesome name- my all time favourite but I couldn't use it for DS as it's my brothers name!

It's not used too much at the moment, I'm a sports coach and am in contact with around 500 kids a week.

My DS is Thomas, there were no other Thomas’ at his primary school (13 now) but a few at high school. We always call him Thomas, but find his class mates & teachers call him Tom. He will always be Thomas to me, but I like Tom too but can’t stand Tommy!

I’d never use it because so many men of my generation (born mid-80s) are called Tom. So I find it a bit boring and wonder if my son’s contemporaries would think of it as a “Dad name”.

It is a classic though so if you don’t know many adults or children called Tom/Thomas, why not.

My Thomas insisted on being a Tom when he was 5, teacher had to ask if we minded them changing his name on peg etc. I wanted Tomas but thought everyone would think he couldnt spell etc

We decided on Tom as we have quite a long Irish surname which people always misspell. Not only do both names work well together but he's not got a longer or unusual first name which would maybe need spelling out too. His younger brother also has a three letter name.

My only grandson is called Tom, and it's Tom, not Thomas, on his birth cert. I was thrilled when my DS and DIL chose it, without any suggestion from us. My father, brother and nephew all have the name too so you COULD say it's a family name! My grandson will never have to spell either his first name or surname thankfully!!

I have a Thomas, named for my grandfather. He was Tommy or T as a small boy, he's now Tom to everyone. He is one of 3 friends who are all called Tom H - even though one of them has the same surname spelled slightly differently, it's never been a problem.

I know six Toms aged from 4 down (am in the CI). One was born two days ago Grin

Personally for me, it’s “nice enough”, it’s not faddy, is well known, but it’s not a name I can get overly excited about.

But you shouldn’t listen to me as my favourite boy’s name is Seth which seems to be fairly disliked here Grin

I've run into a few of them while teaching too, it isn't that rare.

I was coming to say that it seems really popular. Of 22 Cubs, we ha e 6 Thomases, who go variously by Thomas, Tom and Thom. That might be local quirk of 8-10year old boys though.

I think I would like it but there was a Tom when I was at school who was just so awful I can't get past it.

I know 3 Thomas/Tom's under 2 though

Fab name, I have a Thomas Wink

At home he always gets his family nickname which is far too outing and nothing to do with his actual name. He gets Tom at school which sounds bizarre to me, at parents evening it's as if the teachers are talking about someone else.

Although when we chose the name I loved either Thomas or Tom and helpfully he'll answer to most things Grin

Every fourth male seems to be called Thomas or Tom. I think it’s boring and completely overused.

My DS is Thomas, it really suits him. I'm sure he'll be a 'Tom' when he's older but he's always Thomas at the moment. Only had good comments about his name and don't come across many despite its popularity (he's nearly 2).

We are front running with Thomas for a boy! Quite like it being shortened to Thom 😊
