Hamish as Gilbert is an ugly name (sorry)

AnyaMoondial · 31/03/2018 15:09

Hamish. Love it.

dotdotdotmustdash · 31/03/2018 15:08

I went to school with a Gilbert back in the 70s, he was known as Gilly. Mind you, there was also a Titus and a Julian in the class too (state primary, Edinburgh).

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2018 14:55

Love Hamish. Hate Gilbert.

JumpingFrogs · 31/03/2018 14:53

When I read the name Gilbert it makes me think if Giblets...

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2018 12:28

I love Gilbert.

Quincelet · 31/03/2018 12:06

I don't like either tbh, but Gilbert is really really awful, so for that reason if it has to be one of them then Hamish.

Mclaren37 · 31/03/2018 12:05

Thanks all. One of us is Scottish.

I like both! Slightly prefer Hamish

Madeline18 · 31/03/2018 11:11

Hamish. It's a fairly well-known name, I don't think you need to be in Scotland to use it just like Callum or Isobel etc.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/03/2018 11:07

Gilbert is lovely. Hamish is ok if you're from Scotland.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 31/03/2018 09:18

I like Gil but don’t like Gilbert at all.

MrsBungle · 31/03/2018 08:54

Hamish - if you are Scottish. Gilbert is not a nice name in my opinion.

user1498549192 · 31/03/2018 08:51

Hamish by a country mile!

inamechangedforthispost · 31/03/2018 08:44

I wasn't even allowed to name our dog Gilbert!

I would never consider it for s child. I knew an adult Gilbert many years ago, he was not impressed with his parent's choice!

Hellywelly10 · 31/03/2018 08:37

Are you scottish?

llangennith · 31/03/2018 08:35

Gilbert is a horrible name.

ChocolateCrunch · 31/03/2018 08:30

Hamish, 100%.

Babayaggatheboneylegged · 31/03/2018 08:21

What do you call a man who's nearly home?

'Hamish'

Joking aside, it's a nicer name than Gilbert

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 31/03/2018 08:21

Hamish!!!

Eminybob · 31/03/2018 08:21

Hamish!
I have dc2 in the way, and Hamish is on the list.
Gilbert is awful. Although I do think of Johnny Depp in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and that’s not entirely a bad thing.

Holycrapwhatnow · 31/03/2018 08:20

I had Gilbert on my short list for what turned out to be DD1 and still love it.... However would say that lots of people did seem to really dislike it, my DH was not keen and my mother said it was a huge relief that we ended up with a girl instead of a Gilbert, so maybe it's only popular with those of us who loved Anne of Green Gables!

Hamish is nice too, feel strong.

SimonBridges · 31/03/2018 08:18

Hamish.
To anyone of a certain age this is Gilbert.

Hamish or Gilbert?
Mol1628 · 31/03/2018 08:18

Gilbert. Also think Anne of green gables, but love the name anyway. Gil is a cool shortening too.

maamalady · 31/03/2018 08:16

Like pp, I prefer Hamish, but Anne of Green Gables has left me with an enduring soft spot for Gilbert.

Both are great! sits on fence
