I've just had DD, she is a whole 5 days old and we thought we'd picked a good name, but I've just received an email from a family friend saying that it's a terrible name.
Please tell me straight, is Ophelia Elizabeth Cole a horrible name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
diddl · 27/03/2018 20:03

I'm sure if kids want to be rude then the first name will be enough with the "feelya"sound in it.

I still think it's a lovely name though & would use it if I wanted to.

NotACleverName · 27/03/2018 20:03

It sounds nothing like "I feel ya hole", what are some of you on?

Snorkpod · 27/03/2018 20:02

Your friend is rude. If she felt it had to be said (in some cases, it is necessary to tell a parent to rethink a name) she should have sat you down and explained why. Sending an email is cowardly.

I can't see an issue with the name. OK you might stretch it to "I feel your hole" or something but tbh you can make any name seem rude if you try hard enough. Have you said the name in the strongest accent of your area as somethings things can sound different in different accents. I knew a Morgan but her name ended up being pronounced Meeergun by everyone which drove her parents made and made them regret the choice.

bimbobaggins · 27/03/2018 20:01

I don’t like the name but wouldn’t dream of contacting a friend to tell them that.how rude. I hope you replied telling her where to go.

YaBasic · 27/03/2018 20:00

But to be more useful, if this is real, and is truly upsetting you, then double barrel it: Ophelia-Rose maybe awaits the weirdos claiming your rose is your vagina in a Friends Monica-stylee

Dvg · 27/03/2018 20:00

I actually really like that name, there will always be name haters.. just carry on with what you like xx

Lawrence91 · 27/03/2018 20:00

I like it and I think it was quite rude and a bit odd for them to email you about it!

Who cares what other people think as long as you like it that's all that matters, it is a lovely name!!!

Not everyone is going to love it, but that can be said about all names!

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 27/03/2018 20:00

I have an Ophelia. I love her name and so does she.
How very rude of your friend.

niknac1 · 27/03/2018 19:59

I really like your choice of names , they go well with your surname, congratulations it is difficult to choose but your choice sounds right to me.

Wishfulmakeupping · 27/03/2018 19:58

I really wanted to tell you that your friend was a complete tit and while I think it’s so rude to send that to someone so soon after the birth- I really think you need to rethink your dd name with your surname it does sound rather unfortunate sorry op!

shesalady · 27/03/2018 19:57

Eh? I don't get why people are saying this is a joke.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 27/03/2018 19:57

Ophelia is a beautiful name but that is beside the point.

Who on Earth thinks they have the right to email you criticising your child's name!? Tell them to piss off.

BackIntoTheSun · 27/03/2018 19:56

Lovely name. Doesn't sound rude at allConfused

AdoraBell · 27/03/2018 19:55

Also gobsmaked here. I’ve read the OP to DH and we both said, simultaneously, the only appropriate response is fuck off .

Congratulations on your lovely new baby with her lovely name 💐

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 27/03/2018 19:55

It's lovely.
Your friend is rude.

Even if you'd named baby Princess Consuela Bananahammock, she would still be rude.

celesti · 27/03/2018 19:54

Well that fell a bit flat OP, most people don't think it sounds rude. Maybe Ben Dover would have been more obvious?

lottiegarbanzo · 27/03/2018 19:52

It is a beautiful painting - but of a tragic character.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/03/2018 19:52

Even if you'd called your DD Sewerpipe Arsehole, iy's so fucking rude to email to say you don't like it.

AS it is you've chosen a lovely name. I love it.

Congratulations on your lovely new arrival Thanks

YaBasic · 27/03/2018 19:51

I no longer underestimate the collective powers of children's imagination. Not since a register call in Wigan with Joanne Card on it and 32 kids giggling.
Joanne Card? Joanne Card?
Yer not sayin it right, miss!
Jwank ard JWANK ARD fits of giggles
(Do you wank hard...allegedly)
Confused

Despite my knowledge of the aforesaid Joanne, Ben Dover, Hugh Jarse, Phil Mccrackin. Theresa Green, Annette Curtain et al
Ophelia Cole did not fit the bill.
Even applying the laws of Urethra Franklin and trying to make it a leak hole does not pass the supply-register test. 0/10 must try harder! Wink

GothMummy · 27/03/2018 19:50

My daughter is called Ophelia too, because I love the pre Raphaelite painting.

userabcname · 27/03/2018 19:49

I really like it and so does DH. We have no idea what people mean about how it's pronounced - we certainly can't find anything funny or rude about it.

lottiegarbanzo · 27/03/2018 19:49

Ophelia is a lovely name, though the Shakesperian connotations are sad. It does lend itself to 'I feel your...' jokes, but Cole is a non-sequiter for that purpose.

For the above reasons and because it is quite a 'statement' name, I think it's a slightly 'brave' choice. But, that's fine. I met a little Ophelia a while ago and thought, 'oh, bold choice but, pretty name. Why not?'

NailsNeedDoing · 27/03/2018 19:48

I'm sorry, I just read my earlier post back and it sounds mean. I honestly didn't intend that!

Chickoletta · 27/03/2018 19:47

Have you read/seen Hamlet? I agree that it's a beautiful sounding name but I couldn't use it because of the tragic connotations. But then, I'm a pretentious English teacher and you're probably not!

Enjoy your lovely baby girl.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/03/2018 19:47

It's not what I'd choose but I'd never be so horrible as to tell someone it was terrible.
