Email from friend about my baby's name

I've just had DD, she is a whole 5 days old and we thought we'd picked a good name, but I've just received an email from a family friend saying that it's a terrible name.
Please tell me straight, is Ophelia Elizabeth Cole a horrible name?

It's not my taste. But I'm not your friend and I'd suck it up and not be so rude if I were her.

This thread shows it's a perfectly reasonable (lovely to some) name

It is a lovely name and will only ever be a problem if she meets and falls in love with someone whose surname is Dorgan and she decides to double-barrel. That's probably unlikely enough though.

I have a 6 month old DD named Ophelia. Not such a popular name where I live at the moment but seems to be very popular in the UK Easter Blush I really can't understand someone commenting on a friends baby name choice in such a way. She can't have much of a life or maybe she was 'saving' the name for herself. Whatever it is all this baby name stuff drives me bonkers [leaves baby names thread] Easter Grin

Honestly though, Ophelia is such a gorgeous name. I really love it.

Roald Dahl named his own daughter this, so if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for anyone! Smile

The popularity chart of this name is really interesting. It was a commonly used name in the late 1800s and early 1900s and then went right out of usage until the mid 2000s and is now rising rapidly in popularity. Is currently in top 500 girls names in usage.
So not uncommon now days at all.

It's not as if it's even an unusual name. I know one in her 30s and two under 3s. It won't so much as raise an eyebrow at school.

if your rel had objected based on naming your daughter after a famous tragic Shakespearean character who commits suicide, then it might have been an OK warning - some people are v superstitious about that sort of thing...but "how will she spell it? come on, that's ridiculous. It's lovely...

Lovely name. Theres a girl who lives near us called Ophelia. Your 'friend' is very rude and a bit unhinged to go to all the trouble of emailing you because the name youve picked isnt to their taste. Id have nothing more to do with them if I were you. Its really weird and controlling. Why on earth do they think its any of their business what you call your daughter?!

We haven't registered the birth yet, not because of this, just haven't had a chance yet.
Clarabel - thank you for your comments but they are a bit daft.
Everyone else thank you, I'm going to develop a thicker skin and tell the friend its none of her business.

I’m baffled as to what’s wrong with it and also can’t see how it’s at all difficult to say unless you’ve got some sort of speech impediment.

Seriously I’m sitting here repeating it aloud with no trouble at all 😐
