Baby due in 8 weeks - husband and I at loggerheads

We have agreed a boy's name, it's the girls name we're not in agreement with.

We both had a girl's name each we loved, but the other didn't. Since then, I can't find a single name I like. DH is going through lists but it's fair to say our name preferences are light years apart. I also don't understand how we managed to agree so easily on a boy's name but are finding it so hard to agree on a girl's name.

Any tips or advice? We don't know the sex, but I really want the girl's name we pick to be something we both love.
Thanks!

You say you like (a) ending names but don't like any of your husbands choices, the examples of his choices all end in (a) !

Honestly, your heart is obviously set on Adela, for very valid reasons. I think your husband just needs to suck it up and get his choice of middle name :-)

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 28/03/2018 00:30

@MrKaplansGlasses, I don't think that would fly with my dh! He's far too stubborn. And most importantly, I want him to love whatever we pick too, I want us both to.

Dare I say it, but I'm starting to question Robin now. We picked it out when I was about 12 weeks pregnant and haven't revisited boy's name since. I'm a hot preggo mess at the mo!

I can see this baby having no name for a while. 😢

My DH and I couldn't agree on a name for our second. I had one that I absolutely loved and he just kept saying he didn't like it and saying random names to me. I refused to discuss it from about 30 weeks pregnant. When the baby was born the midwife asked if she had a name and I told her the name that I'd loved all along. DH just laughed and said if I wanted her to be called it that much then we'd go with it. I just asked him and he can't imagine her being called anything else now.
Not necessarily saying that's the way to get your own way mind you, just my story.

Robyn Adela is nice but Adela Robyn would be nicer in my mind!

Our mum's names are Janice and Christina. Not fussed on either names, but they have so much meaning to Dh and I. If baby is a girl and I had it my way she'd be Adela Janice Christina, or at least, Adelena Janice Christina.

Some lovely suggestions on this post but nothing is reaching my levels of love as Adela.
I've been through tons of websites, gone through lists of thousands and thousands of names. I've gone through our baby name book with a fine tooth comb and I can't find anything.
I just don't know what to do. I've tried and tried to let go of this name, but I just can't. It's so special and important to me. Even after DH said he wasn't keen, the name has just grown and grown on me.

And on the other hand, he's just scrolling through lists on his phone in between episodes on Facebook/Tumblr etc just picking random names he kind of likes. When he showed me his list last night there were several joke names he was laughing about. I gave the list straight back to him and asked him to take out the joke names, four or five came off and he was left with a few names. He'd only got to the L names on his baby name app. He's had months and months to take this seriously. Nothing on his list had any meaning (I admit, they don't really have to), but when I've put so much effort into finding meaningful names, I'm starting to resent him being so blasé about the task!

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant! I'm a tad frustrated!!

We were just the same - dead set and in agreement on boys names and couldn’t agree on girls at all!

Thankfully we had 2 boys!

MimiSunshine · 27/03/2018 22:11

See I think Robyn Adela on a girl sounds lovely. But you’ve already said the middle names are set.

Would you still be giving a daughter your mother’s/MILs names if your husband changed his mind and agreed to Adela?

Perhaps you could think about swapping out your mothers and using Adela as one of the middle names and finding a name that a) you both love and b) would be your daughters own name rather than repeat.

How about:
Cassandra - Greek & batgirl apparently
Gabriella
Vanessa
Lana - from superman

Roberta

HeartySoup · 27/03/2018 19:25

What about names like Lara, Zara, Tara?

spacecadet48 · 27/03/2018 18:34

I quite like Callista, there are a few to choose from. Get on google and you and your DH go through the many lists of namrs. Acadia, Arcadia, Astoria, Alethia, Ophelia, Portia, Valeria. Gaia, Corinthea, Giovanna, Astoria..there are hundreds! Good luck

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 27/03/2018 18:31

Callista is nice too.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 27/03/2018 18:30

What about Leia?
Nice a sound at the end. Has a similar sounds to Adela and the Star Wars connection might appeal to your dh.

Lucia and Viola have a similar type of feel too.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 27/03/2018 18:26

What's the consensus on the name Callista or Kallista?

Is a Greek name ending in a ✔️
It means most beautiful - neato
It could be shortened to Callie or Kalli (Kalli is the surname of the Greek side of my family).

Any superhero references for the name???

Still don't love it over Adela, but it's an idea (one I haven't shared with DH though).

Magdelena?

unicornfarts · 27/03/2018 18:23

Ava/ Eva?
Evelina?
Gaia?
Arya?

spacecadet48 · 27/03/2018 18:23

We have argued with all 4 of our DC! We even only decided with DC3 as we were on way to registering the birth. We have only one DD called Hannah, her cousin is Jemima and another Ella. You will definitely find the name that you both agree on...good luck. And good luck when the wee one arrives too!

DonaldWeasley · 27/03/2018 18:19

Talia Al-gul, she’s not exactly a goodie but my superhero-mad DH was keen on it. I vetoed it though.

MeltingSnowflake · 27/03/2018 18:18

Try the Babyname app - you both download it on your phones, friend each other and then you both swipe left/right on names and the app creates a list of the ones you both like!

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 27/03/2018 18:17

@DonaldWeasley, who's that then?!? Don't recognise the name. I like Talia, but don't love it.
Not so keen on Ada, although I am a fan of all the Ada... and Ade... names.
I think I've just not come to terms with the fact that I can't call our potential girl Adela. I really am very in love with this name. I find myself almost grieving it if that makes sense. Probably the bloody pregnancy hormones!

@ChocolateCrunch, I LOVE that name. However, it's too similar to my daughter's name, Thea. It would get quite difficult calling both those names out without getting the girls confused!!
I do really really love it though!

Talia? Character from batman but also ends in A.

Ada

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/03/2018 18:08

Go on namedtogether.com and see if there are some you agree on.

ChocolateCrunch · 27/03/2018 18:07

Do you like Athena? Sounds superhero/comic book themed, plus it ends in 'a' and is Greek inspired!

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 27/03/2018 17:59

@User27839494 He likes Jessica and then comic book names, superhero names etc, such as Cara - think that's supergirl's name, Selina etc.

I'm in love with the name Adela (pronounced A-day-la). It's a German name, it was my great aunt's name and has so much significance to me. It would mean the world to my mum and nana (and me of course) if I named baby this if it's a girl. My great aunt brought up my nana so she was practically her mother. I also like Adelena as it's a play on the name, but hubs doesn't care for either name.

I like names ending in 'a'. DH is happy to have 'a' ending names, but that's as far as we get in agreeing.

@MimiSunshine, our boy's name is Robin. I love it because it's a sweet name and a boy could make it sound more grown up as he gets older by shortening to Rob if he wished. DH loves Robin because it's Batman's sidekick's name! 🙄

While I like Robin/Robyn for a girl, for some reason I'm not in love with it for a girl. And again, I have this thing for 'a' ending girl's names. I think it's a Greek thing (family are Greek Cypriot and all us girls and ladies having names ending in a).

For those who mentioned using one of our favourites as a middle name; unfortunately we've already picked out middle names for a girl and a boy. A boy will have both our father's names and a girl will have both our mother's names. It would have been a compromise but we're both set on having our parents name's as middle names.

We're a fussy pair, aren't we?!?

Get a baby name book, start at A and work your way through? That's what DH and I did - passed some time in the labour ward, at least....
