Baby due in 8 weeks - husband and I at loggerheads

We have agreed a boy's name, it's the girls name we're not in agreement with.

We both had a girl's name each we loved, but the other didn't. Since then, I can't find a single name I like. DH is going through lists but it's fair to say our name preferences are light years apart. I also don't understand how we managed to agree so easily on a boy's name but are finding it so hard to agree on a girl's name.

Any tips or advice? We don't know the sex, but I really want the girl's name we pick to be something we both love.
Thanks!

I don't know how a man can watch his wife carry a baby and give birth, and not let her choose the name... Unless it's something he HATES then what's the problem? I think names change meaning once you give them to a child anyway. I don't think of my baby's name in the same way now as I did before she was born. The name is hers now and when I think of it I think of her little character.

Ok, I’m biased... but my name is Adele. I was just thinking the other day that I love my name. It isn’t too fussy, passes the plumber / Human Rights Lawyer test, is unusual enough that there aren’t hundreds, but still easily recognisable as a real name too. I also love the versions Adeline and Adela (actually when I was growing up I’d have preferred Adela).
Would Madeleine or Madeleina be a compromise?
FWIW, I also like Jessica, but not as much as Adela.

BTW, to post this I tried to change my user name to AdeleIsTheGreatestName, but it was taken, so more than one person has the same idea!

@FartnissEverbeans Every day is a school day! Was convinced Artemis was a boy only name. Didn't know it was both! I've done some googling and I stand corrected!..... Don't like it though, so gonna put a line through that one.

He's not totally about the superhero/comic book names, no. I'll have to look at his list again and see what he's got on there now.

I think I'm going to do what someone up thread suggested and park the choosing of a girl's name for now. Will (try to) wait and see who we've got, and if needs be, choose a girl's name then!

@longestlurkerever I actually like Cara too. It's a nice name. We had a weirdo neighbour called Cara until last year when we moved. I can't get past that!! He likes Cora too, but that's the Evil Queen's mum's name in Once Upon a Time. She was nastee!

@LastNightsMakeUp I get your thinking. I wouldn't be naming him after Batman's sidekick, I'd be naming him that as I love the name Robin, and c'mon, those little birds are sticking cute!!
I vetoed Clark early on, and several other superhero names! It's determined to give a son of ours Optimus Prime as a middle name. See what I'm dealing with here!!!

@Raines100 How would you pronounce Adélie out of interest?

@Katara It was a joke, hence the smilie face.

I've googled and see it's a girls name. Gone through life believing it was a boy's name. Begging your forgiveness.

How about Alba?

Raines100 · 29/03/2018 18:48

I love Adela too, but that's not helpful
Adelaine? Adélie? Elena?

Katara · 29/03/2018 18:47

Yes, I know an Artemis, she is lovely - the suggestion does not warrant ‘are you on glue?!?’

LastNightsMakeUp · 29/03/2018 18:42

Am I allowed to completely stick a nail in and say I wouldn't be too keen to name my ds after a sidekick...? 😬 I'd want him to be the leading man.... Clark? Or Joseph (superman's middle name).

Although removing Robin from the 'Superman' connotations I think it is a fine name.

longestlurkerever · 29/03/2018 18:39

I love Cara from your dh's list, and also Mara, which is the name of a Greek character in the Trebizon books though I don't know if it is really used in Greece? I do understand being dead set on a name but it's quite common for a couple not to see eye to eye on this and have to find a compromise.

FartnissEverbeans · 29/03/2018 18:31

Artemis is a girls' name! In fact, isn't that a bit of a joke in the Artemis Fowl books...?

I know a beautiful teenage Artemis.

Callista and Adela are both beautiful. Is he really only going for superhero names...?

Robin for a boy is lovely too

stiffstink · 29/03/2018 18:28

I like Callista and if you go with the shortening Calli your DH can call her Kal-el (Superman’s Krypton name).

SherbertLemon2011 · 29/03/2018 18:16

Is the baby going to have his surname? I only ask because if that is a yes then the baby will be getting two names from his family so maybe you could argue getting two from yours.

I had a very tough labour with one of my dc and after that dh said I could make the final decision. I don't think we would have agreed otherwise but hopefully your labour will not be like that

@LastNightsMakeUp It's so hard isn't it? Again, I like Adelaide, I really do. It's just this blasted emotional attached to Adela that I can't let go of.
I have no other option but to get rid of it from my mind.
Some great suggestions on this thread. I'm writing some down and playing them over in my head.

I'm totally blaming the preggo hormones. Think we'll just wait to see what we've got and if it's a girl, name her after she's born.

I could be stressing for no reason here!!

@AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight I'm just hearing Artemis Fowl in my head.
