Bethan

I already have a little boy with a Welsh name. We are hoping to try for another baby soon so naturally thinking about names, and would like another Welsh one.

What are the general thoughts of Bethan? Is it dated? How many do you know under 10?

Thanks Smile

It's definitely Beth-an not Beth-un.

You would not be able to get a Bethun welsh pronunciation

TataMamma · 12/10/2021 12:11

@RobinGoch

I have a Bethan and live in North England so do get people mistakenly calling her Bethany or tending to pronounce Bethun. She's 13 now and the only one we know. She tends to be called Beth now. When she was little holidays back home in Wales we're always exciting for her because she could get personalised key rings and fridge magnets with her name on....
Weird! I'm Welsh and knew a Bethan growing up - I always thought it was supposed to be pronounced Bethun, and not Beth-an?
TataMamma · 12/10/2021 12:09

I love it. I like the fact it's Welsh but you won't find it mispronounced in England as so many Welsh names are. Like Beth too.

I really like this name! So much so, it’s now on my list for the contender for my lil girl! Thank you!

GogLais · 09/10/2021 19:24

Nice enough name but a middle-aged Welsh speaker's name.

It’s a nice name but, as someone mentioned above, it just looks like an unfinished Bethany to me. If you live in Wales it may be more OK, if you’re in England you may get people thinking it’s Bethany.

I love Bethan

I also like Bethel

bobbinogs · 24/03/2018 20:07

I am Welsh but living in England and have a Bethan. Gorgeous, name and unusual round here but she does have to remind people sometimes that she's not called Bethany. Also where as I tend to stress the first syllable often English pronunciation tends to stress second syllable.

Glumglowworm · 24/03/2018 20:01

It’s lovely

I know a few who are about 12 or 13 (I live in Wales). I prefer Bethan to Betsan personally

MikeUniformMike · 24/03/2018 12:39

It's popular. It was hugely popular with welsh-speakers in the 1960s and 70s. Bethan pronounced with the 'a' as in 'can'. 'man' etc is nice but Bethan pronounced Bethun isn't.

breadwidow · 24/03/2018 08:16

My daughters name so of course I love it. Feminine with out being girly, not too long, easy to spell. Slightly unusual (esp if you don't live in Wales) without being odd.

I got the idea because one of my brothers oldest friends is bethan, so def don't see it as an old lady name.

Dunno if it's cos I don't live in Wales, but one thing to be aware of is a quite lot of people assume by daughters name is Bethany Angry

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 24/03/2018 07:38

I really like the name Bethan.

MadMaryBoddington · 24/03/2018 07:34

I don’t like it. It sounds a bit worthy to me.

Newtothismumthing · 23/03/2018 13:53

I don't know any under 10 but think it's a lovely name. You could also consider Betsy, as a name or as a nickname for Bethan?

spiderlight · 23/03/2018 12:43

I love it. I know two - one in her 20s and one in her late 30s, both absolutely lovely.

MealyPotatoes · 23/03/2018 10:31

Very lovely name.

theveryhighlife · 23/03/2018 09:58

One of my best friends is a Bethan - in her 30's. It's a lovely name for your daughter

Creatureofthenight · 23/03/2018 09:52

It’s a lovely name.

dicdicnurse · 23/03/2018 09:42

My DD1 (8yrs) is Bethan so I'm totally biased but I love it.

ReversingSnail · 23/03/2018 09:37

I really like it.

Lovely! Such a beautiful, gentle sounding name.

Namechangemum100 · 23/03/2018 08:49

Love bethan ❤️

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 23/03/2018 08:47

I like Bethan and (even more) Betsan - they are pretty and likeable names.

I think of it as a name a posh or aspirational parent might not choose but, again, that is no bad thing (Agamemnon or Persephone? No thanks. Mine's a Betsan.)

BobLoblawLawBlog · 23/03/2018 08:33

Love it. I knew one at school and was always jealous of her lovely name.
