Love this name but family aren't sure on it

Pregnant with DD2. i saw the name Mallory on a site and knew straight away that was the name i wanted. DH agreed, the only issue is mine and his family's don't agree!

I know it's our choice but it still hurts that they don't like the name we've chosen and i don't want to have to listen to snidey comments about it forever! do you guys think that it's a name someone would get teased for having/thought of as a snob for having?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BitOutOfPractice · 19/03/2018 13:04

I like it. The fact that it reminds me of Mallory Towers is only a good thing. I love Mallory Towers. I so wanted to go to boarding school after reading them

Congrats on the baby and the lovely name

HouseworkIsASin10 · 19/03/2018 12:59

I like Mallory, don't like Mallie.

It's really best the tell people the name when baby is here and it's a done deal.

GinIsIn · 19/03/2018 12:47

Perhaps they are bothered by the meaning? If you aren’t then it shouldn’t matter!

Sophronia · 19/03/2018 12:42

It’s a nice name but the meaning is a bit off-putting.

SeeKnievelHitThe17thBus · 19/03/2018 12:32

We learned this with DS 1 where we had a name and my sister was really snide about it because it reminded her of a boy she was at primary school with (this is a woman who was in her 30s!).

Lesson learned. No. 2 now on the way and family will know once the baby is here with name chosen and on official hospital paperwork. Not before.

You have a name that you and your DH both love. We're still wrestling with names so I'd give my right arm to be you Grin. Practice smiling and nodding and the phrases "yes, I know you don't like it" and "yes, we have a name we've chosen" and ignore further attempts at name conversations from family members.

Good luck OP with your pregnancy.

TatianaLarina · 19/03/2018 12:32

I don’t like as it’s American, but that’s irrelevant and so are the views of your parents/in laws.

I couldn’t give a shit what my relations think of our name choices. I don’t know why you’d care.

cakecakecheese · 19/03/2018 12:27

I loved Babysitters Club.

Tell everyone you've changed your mind and your daughter will now be called Princess Honeysuckle Meringue, they'll be pleased when you go back to Mallory Grin

KarmaStar · 19/03/2018 12:26

A pretty name imo OP

Ariesgirl1988 · 19/03/2018 12:23

Tbh its your's and DH choice not the family's if they don't like it tough! But whatever you do don't' show them the film natural born killers Grin

Shmithecat · 19/03/2018 12:23

I love it. Particularly because of the Mallory Towers association! Go for it.

Tartyflette · 19/03/2018 12:21

It's certainly not an old fashioned name -- it is basically a surname that has been appropriated for use as a first name only within the last dozen years or so.
It sounds very American to me, as do Taylor, Cameron, Madison and various other surnames which are now used as girls' names for some reason.
It's just a fashionable thing which means it will also go out of fashion sooner or later. (Speaking from bitter experience here as I have a once-fahsioanable name which now verges on the risible. )

LadyPug · 19/03/2018 12:19

Lovely name. Trust yourself. That moment when you know it’s the name I think says it all. It’s one thing thinking “oh this is a nice name...” but i think when you get that YES! you just need to go with it. People will get used to it and it’s lovely

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 19/03/2018 12:17

It sounds nice to me, not wacky.
mine and his family's don't agree!
Luckily they don't get to choose do they.
Perhaps they'll soften when she's born.
(You may go off it before she arrives but that too would be entirely your business).

Nemophilist · 19/03/2018 12:15

This is why we kept dd's name a secret until she arrived.

AdoraBell · 19/03/2018 12:14

Sounds lovely OP and as pp have said, it’s up to you and DH. No one else’s business.

llangennith · 19/03/2018 12:13

Lovely name, unusual in the UK but not weird. I know two American Mallorys, their friends ended up calling them Mal for short.

AlistairAppletonssexyscarf · 19/03/2018 12:12

My eldest has one of the newly fashionable old person names. My in-laws hated it and still shorten it at all times even though we don't. But they adore their grandchild which is what matters.

PastaOfMuppets · 19/03/2018 12:11

Takes me back to The Babysitters Club - Mallory Pike - and Malory Towers.

Your family's reaction is the reason why I would never share my intended name with anyone til it's on the birth certificate. Use the name you want, and tell them to stop being rude.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 19/03/2018 12:10

Ah, OP, have you looked at the meaning of Mallory? I've just googled it, to see how old it is and it means unlucky/unfortunate (from French). If that kind of thing doesn't bother you then that's fine! Sorry Blush

Trampire · 19/03/2018 12:10

I gave my dcs very normal well used names and I still got Hmm looks off people and comments like "since you're an artist we really thought you go fir something quirky"

You can't win either way.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 19/03/2018 12:09

Well, they'll just have to get used to it.
It's a lovely name !

Trampire · 19/03/2018 12:08

I think it's lovely. Beautiful sounding.

If you wanted a nn it could indeed be Mallie or Lory (Pronounced Laurie).

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 19/03/2018 12:05

I really like it, and I'm usually a bit Hmm at baby name threads!
We didn't tell ANYONE our name choices when I was pregnant. DM insisted on suggesting names, I just changed the subject. We consistently told everyone that asked that we hadn't decided yet. We weren't interested in anyone else's opinion (our names were mainstream, with normal spellings so no need to ask for opinions on pronunciation etc.)

Ham69 · 19/03/2018 12:03

Lovely name. Older generations have a totally different view/ taste on names. Don’t take it to heart, your baby will grow into their name and they will soon get used to it. Only thing I would point out is the meaning of the name isn’t ideal if that would bother you.

64BooLane · 19/03/2018 11:59

Ah well, they're wrong in saying it's not a proper name, OP. I hope they come round! They will when they meet the small warm Mallory bundle.

I think the pp who said it was more widely used in America is right - the Mallorys I can think of (only a few over the years, both real and fictional) have been American.
