Violet as I know quite a few little Iris’s

daisypond · 17/03/2018 16:52

I prefer Iris to Violet. Violets are small, invasive weeds that wreck your lawn, and it has a "vile" or "violent" sound to it. At least an iris is a decent flower.

Mclaren37 · 17/03/2018 16:52

Iris was in the final top two for our daughter’s name, so I really love it. Violet was top 10. However since then I’ve met a gorgeous little Violet and I think I prefer it now! I love how it has a subtle three syllables, whereas Iris has only two. Violet feels like it has a bit more depth and shape as a word. (Iyswim!) So pretty.

missmouse101 · 17/03/2018 16:24

Not keen on either, especially Iris. It's the coloured part of the eye. Violet is like violent and Vi as a nickname? No! Sorry! If you love them, you use them though!

madamedepoppadom · 17/03/2018 16:02

I like both, but I think I like Iris slightly better.

PeterRabbitEatingHisCarrot · 15/03/2018 13:55

I love Iris Adeline! I hate Violet, it just seems a very weak name.

Fontella · 15/03/2018 13:24

Iris Adeline ......

My mum's name was 'Iris' and her mother's name was 'Adelia'

so not far off ....!

i think Violet Iris / Iris Violet might be a bit too purple / flowery. Would prefer to use Adeline as middle name as i love it x

Or Iris Violet I meant to say. I’d ditch Adeline personally.

TatianaLarina · 15/03/2018 10:04

Don’t like Adeline.

Violet Iris is beautiful.

summerba · 15/03/2018 10:02

thanks everyone, middle name is most likely going to be Adeline, think Iris might flow better with it?

I think violet is beautiful, precious for a baby girl, iris sounds like an older woman's name

Abetes · 15/03/2018 07:09

Iris

LoveInTokyo · 15/03/2018 07:05

It would still be Vee-oh-let rather than Vy-oh-let though. It’s off my list for that reason but no reason the OP shouldn’t go for it.

TatianaLarina · 14/03/2018 19:19

But you could use Violette as in Szabo.

In France you just explain it’s pronounced as Violette rather than Violay.

LoveInTokyo · 14/03/2018 18:48

I like both.

I live in France so I could never use Violet because it literally means the colour purple and is pronounced Vee-oh-lay.

Bear that in mind if you think you might spend any significant time in France.

Littlemum2be86 · 14/03/2018 18:43

My niece is called violet so I’m slightly biased but I love it! I’d have used it if my sister hadn’t got there first!

VileyRose · 14/03/2018 17:41

My DDs name. Never heard anyone say Vile-let lol

Greenglassteacup · 14/03/2018 17:39

There’s a girl in my child’s school called Violet & everyone seems to pronounce it Vile-ett. Northern UK here

TatianaLarina · 14/03/2018 17:30

Who says Vi-let? It’s just wrong.

jess91 · 14/03/2018 17:08

Violet is 3 syllables with a schwa: Vi-O-Let. I'd not let incorrect pronunciation of the name put you off using it. Violet would be my pick but I'm biased as it'll be our daughter's first or middle name.

RebelRogue · 14/03/2018 16:37

Iris but I'm biased.Grin

Greenglassteacup · 14/03/2018 16:35

Isn’t that how a lot of people pronounce it? Rather than Vio-lette

Greenglassteacup · 14/03/2018 16:34

Vile- ett

Starlive22 · 14/03/2018 16:31

Oh ❤️ both beautiful names OP I love them both! I'd say violet but I'm a bit biased as that's my nieces middle name.

Have you got any middle names?
