Our baby girl is due in June. We're stuck on names. Help! Which do you prefer?

My DH has decided he likes the idea of Tilly or weirdly Tilly Mint (I have no idea where he got this from!!) and is clinging on to Matilda. I already know of one other Matilda along friends and think it will be very popular over the next few years, and then become quite dated.

I do prefer the spelling Marisa but I believe traditionally it is pronounced Mah-Reese-Ah rather than Mah-Riss-Ah which is what I prefer. I do like Melissa also but prefer Marissa as it's less common and avoids the shortening to Mel.

I like the nickname Rissa if we shorten Marissa but then I'd probably just use the full version as I think it's pretty.

I find picking names so hard. Thanks again for the input. I find boys names much easier!

Matilda.

FizzyGreenWater · 08/03/2018 10:06

Marisa, but spelled this way - beautiful and classy.

I like Matilda, but honestly they are EVERYWHERE. It's so overused that it's now really boring!

Matilda would probably be Tilly, Marisa/Marissa possibly Issa or Miss? What are your thoughts on nicknames?

Also - have you considered Melissa? That's lovely and very underused, as is Vanessa (I always put those together in my head).

Marissa.

Matilda is clunky.

strawberrypenguin · 08/03/2018 06:58

Matilda it's a lovely name.

Swishswish26 · 08/03/2018 06:55

I like both but I have two children at primary school and there are Matilda’s in almost every year group, more than one too. Sometime shortened to Tilly.

noitsachicken · 08/03/2018 06:49

I don’t understand the popularity of Matilda, it’s sounds hard and clunky to me. Also reminds me of nursery rhyme characters.
Beatrice is lovely, best by far.

schnubbins · 08/03/2018 06:45

Marissa is lovely.Matilda is cute for a little girl but not so suitable for an adult in my opinion.

GrainOfSalt · 08/03/2018 06:36

I have a lisp so am very glad I wasn't named anything with a 'sss' in it. It limited my choice of names for DC too - so I would go with Matilda Grin

userabcname · 08/03/2018 06:01

Matilda

annandale · 08/03/2018 05:30

All lovely. I also prefer Marisa to Marissa, though it won't be so consistently pronounced if you are in the UK. I also think of Matilda as quite popular, but tbh I don't actually know a single one of any age. If you pick something that you think is 'out there', usually about 5 other couples will do the same - Matilda is a great name. Til is a lovely NN.

Snipples · 08/03/2018 04:59

Oh a few more for Marissa now! Thanks for the responses.

My thinking re Matilda is that it's becoming very popular and there will be lots of little Matilda's in her class etc. and also I just see it as a little girls name (no offence intended to any Matilda mums out there).

Our other main option is Beatrice.

Marissa. Love it. It sounds softer too

onemoremummy · 07/03/2018 19:05

I think Marissa is lovely, Matilda is also nice but too popular!

Biscuitsneeded · 07/03/2018 19:05

I find Marissa a bit twee, but Marisa much less so, weirdly. I like Matilda very much.

Pemba · 07/03/2018 19:03

Marissa is nicer, IMO, and Matilda is too popular at the moment.

CPtart · 07/03/2018 19:03

Marissa, its more of an adult name in the long run.

Sophronia · 07/03/2018 18:20

Marissa is a bit more interesting as it’s less popular

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/03/2018 17:49

Matilda, though I do like Marissa.

Godowneasy · 07/03/2018 17:02

Marissa. Or Alissa?

chezmk1988 · 07/03/2018 16:51

Marissa

Redrosebelle · 07/03/2018 16:51

Marissa is beautiful. I like both but Marissa gets my vote!

Yogagirl123 · 07/03/2018 16:50

Both lovely names, I love Marissa, only ever known one and she was a lovely girl.

IVflytrap · 07/03/2018 16:46

Marissa is beautiful.

AnyaMoondial · 07/03/2018 16:45

I know Matilda is popular but it is fantastic. I can not imagine regretting using this name.
