Marissa or Matilda

Our baby girl is due in June. We're stuck on names. Help! Which do you prefer?

I know one Marisa, who is about 50, pronounced the same as Marissa. I think it is much nicer than Matilda.

Matilda is too popular. You have months to think of a name. Marissa is nice but I don't love it. it will get shortened.

I used to love Matilda but it's become so well used that I find it a bit dull now

As someone who works in a primary school, please no more Matilidas and Tillys. So over done. And not even that nice! I wouldn't want to be a grown up Tilly.

Matildas are ten a penny now.

Melissa was a briefly fashionable 70s / 80s name. Marissa is far less faddy. Few people will muddle the two (and I agree about avoiding Mel).

I love Marissa, especially with nn Missy. This would be my top choice!

Matilda is nice but a little childish and less memorable. The Roald Dahl link is nice though. The film remake might lead to a spike in popularity.

Some people call mine Riss or Missy, and I've called her Mimi in the past, but tend to use affectionate names which have no relationship to get actual name at all like 'moshling'.

I have a Marissa and v v rarely mixed up with Melissa (maybe once in 9 years). I think it's quite exotic. Matilda is much more granny chic/ trendy and personally I don't like it. My other choices were Claudia, Meredith and Kristin. Actually dd is more of a Claudia so I do regret that a bit. Also Marissa is hard for nicknames.

I like Marissa and Matilda, but Matilda is very very popular now.

Interestingly, auto correct changes Marissa to Marisa.

Marissa by a county mile - Matildas are ten a penny now, and so the name will date. Really not keen on the Tilly nickname either it's part of the ubiquitous Tilly/Millie/Lily/Ellie etc name set that about 85% of girls seem to be called.

I like the nickname Rissa if we shorten Marissa but then I'd probably just use the full version as I think it's pretty
I know a couple of Marissa's at varying ages. It's never shortened. It doesn't need to be. It's lovely as it is and hardly a long word!

I really like Marissa and Matilda. Marissa makes me think of the OC! Not keen on Melissa at all. You might also like Mariella
