Rowan?

Thoughts on this name for a boy. Is it a bit feminine?

I think of it as a girls' name, a cousin of mine was given it for a middle name way back in the 70s, there also female characters named Rowan in the film 'The Wicker Man' and Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches books. So going back quite a while. It's also a tree, as in the name Willow, and most plant names seem to be feminine.

Of course I know it can be masculine too, as in Rowan Atkinson and Rowan Williams, but I prefer it for girls.

It's not. It was originally a boy's name (taken from the surname) and is given to 5-6 times as many boys in the UK as girls every year. It is a boy's name.

Thanks for your feedback. I still love it, I just didn't want it to be one of the names that is predominately female, like Hilary or Stacey, by the time he's 50! I guess we can't know that though! Jude seems to be doing fine for a boy though and that used to be more of a girl's name.

Rather girly, as it's a girls name.
Rohan is the boy's name.

I know it's so similar but I'm not keen on Rohan at all.

It is far more commonly used as a boys name, although this may be changing. ONS figures for 2015 have it at 105th for boys and 468th for girls.

We liked Rowan, but were put off by a uni friend having a female Rowan while I was pregnant. I still think it's a more masculine name, though. We called DS Euan instead.

It's not a name I'd pick. However I think Rowan is a nice name. I wouldn't have thought it was too feminine. Infact when I imagine a Rowan, I imagine an outdoorsy kind of boy who loves nature and climbing trees and stuff. It surprises me that Rowan isn't more popular tbh.

Great name! I wanted it for Ds but FIL is called Roman 😩 so it would have been too similar.

It was on our list for DS1 had he been a girl. I don't like it for a boy for some reason.

When he started school there was a red haired boy called Rowan in his class so I'm glad we didn't have a girl, she'd have spent her school years being called girl Rowan Grin

Love it-I was going to use it for my son when he is born but me and DH couldn’t agree spellings, he wanted Rohan and I wanted Roan :(

I love it- we have it picked for DS2 and much prefer it for a boy. Like that it's strong and recognisable but not overly popular. I think it will rise in the next year or so though... it is much more populate in certain regions (Wales/ SW) according to this website:

Know a 3-year-old Rowan, a 2-year-old with the middle name Rowan and a baby called Rowan. All boys.
I really like it, as either a boys or girls name tbh. I do find it masculine though.
Also makes me think of Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean, Blackadder etc.)

I love it for a girl but am less keen for a boy. Not because I think it's particularly feminine, though, just because of the people I've known with that name.
