How would you say Ceri? And would you know how to spell it?

Considering this as a girl's name, but worried that it'll be constantly mis-spelt/mispronounced (we don't live in Wales). Thoughts, please?

She calls herself Sarah because that's how her parents always said it. So that's her name. It's just spelt wrongly.

Every American Sara I've met (I've met a lot of them) pronounced their name as Sarah, so I don't buy that it's an incorrect spelling.

I'd say Kerry if I saw it written as Ceri, because it's like names like Cerys/Carys, etc. I'm in the southeast. But if I just heard it, I'd assume it was spelled Kerry as my first thought.

Probably because her mother decided she wanted a more unusual spelling for Sarah, causing poor Sara a lifetime of grief explaining that she's a Sarah not a Sara.

It's the Welsh version of Kerry I think. I'd pronounce it the same.

I would pronounce it Kerry and would spell it like that if I heard it said, too. Ceri is sweet but unless you live in Wales, I think there will be a lifetime of correcting other people by the poor child.

Oh and yes I know male and female ones - and somehow it suits both equally. A true unisex name in Wales.

Kerry of course.

I wouldn't worry even about living in a place where most people would go for Cherry/Seri. It's such a simple name that it only takes saying it once to correct. And Kerry is such a familiar normal name that there would be no problems on introduction, they'd assume spelling would be Kerry but as soon as it's written down - again no problem. It's pretty simple.

PuppyMonkey interesting you should say that, I think I’ve encountered more people reading it as ‘Serry’ since the rise of Game of Thrones and wondered if it was connected to Cersei!

OP, I really love my name. The odd Serry/Cherry doesn’t put me off it.

I'm Welsh(Welsh is my first language.)
I would pronounce Ceri as Kerry.
I have both male and female friends who are both called Ceri.

I've never met a Ceri but would definitely have pronounced it Serry until I read this thread. If someone told me his / her name was (pronounced) Kerry, I'd spell it Kerry. Ceri does look really pretty written down though.

Elena sorry you are wrong. Sarah and Sara are basically the same name, same origin, it's just that Sarah is (I think) always said 'sair-ah', whereas Sara can be sair-ah or sah-ra. Look at Sara Pascoe, also the little girl in 'A little princess' - both said as sair-a. In America they assume Sara is said as Sarah, and they think of it as just an alternative spelling.

Used to live near the Welsh border, and knew a few little girls with this name, so I know it is pronounced the same as Kerry. I like it.

I would say it Kerry but if I heard “Kerry” on a non-Welsh girl I would assume spelt that way, not Ceri.

I knew a Welsh Ceri pronounced Kerry. She had the odd person call her Cherry and just laughed it off. In think it is a much nicer spelling, sorry to any Kerrys.

NB it wouldn’t have crossed my mind that people outside of Wales might not have encountered this spelling, but I can see now that it’s not as widespread as I thought!

I know lots of people called Ceri, both Male and female; it’s a pretty common name (and spelling) in these parts.

It's pronounced Kerry but not sure if you may get some mis pronunciation. I wanted to use Caoimhe or Saoirse which are Irish names but I live in England so wouldn't as I know people won't get it right.

I think you might get a lot of people saying Serri.

I think you might also get a lot of people like me who have bad eyes thinking it’s Cersei (Game of Thrones fan). Grin

I would have said Seri, I've never heard the name pronounced before-sorry!
