What do you think of when you hear the names ...

Genevieve, Alma, Margot, Liv, Eliza?

And do you have any strong negative opinions towards any of them? (Like do
you consider any of them to be too common/pretentious/ugly/anything)

Genevieve- don’t like it, too long for my taste
Alma- nice, pretty name, I like it
Margot- okay but a bit harsh sounding in my opinion, like maggy as a nn though
Liv- makes me think of Olivia and it’s too popular, overused
Eliza- nice, like it

The only person I know with Liv as her actual name is of Scandinavian origin and it's pronounced leave. I wouldn't do it.

Margot: gorgeous
Eliza: fine
Genevieve: not keen
Alma: awful

I am not keen on Liv as a standalone name. Sounds like a diminutive and even then a bit of a tricky one. Really not keenZ

Thank you everyone for the feedback! Loved everyone's images, I enjoyed reading these! Funny, as not what I'd expected. I got the name Alma from an Argentinian friend with the name - apparently it's quite popular in some Spanish speaking countries and has some lovely meanings (soul, kind) so I'd thought it sounded quite sweet. I'd totally forgotten about Alma from Coronation Street and Alma Pudden and may have gone off it a little - it's funny how connections with a name can really change the name for you! I like old fashioned, slightly different names just because I'm definitely not 'cool' enough to pull off anything too quirky or unusual, but I didn't realise that some of these names might come across as a little pretentious rather than traditional and pretty. Also, now you mention it, I guess Liv does sound unfinished, but I'd heard it as a Scandinavian stand-alone name and again, stupidly it hadn't occurred to me that everyone would just think it was short for Olivia. So interesting to hear all your thoughts, definitely a lot to think about - thank you everyone! x

Genevieve and Margot are both beautiful names which I really like but have a pretentious air to them. Eliza seems timeless and feminine, classy without being pretentious. Not a fan of alma but can't put a finger on why, and really dislike Liv because it's very common and plain in my opinion

Alma makes me think of a nervous mousy woman - probably Corrie connection.

I love Tess/Tessa. Liv is nice, if it's a shortening of Olivia/Olive/Livia.

Genevieve - I love it

Alma- I like it but I wouldn't use it as there's a pub near me called 'the Alma' but I doubt you have that same problem. Went to school with a lovely girl called Alma. She was a very kind and warm person.

Margot- is on my list but without the T. Love it. Think on here it's a marmite name.

Liv - sounds like it's short for Olivia and don't like it as a stand alone name.

Eliza - like it but not sure if it's too harsh sounding for me personally.

I like them all.

My only issue with Genevieve would be 'how do the parents/this person pronounce the name'? Gen-ervive? Jenna-vive?Jean-vi-ev?

Alma is my least favourite, but has that old-lady chic a bit like Edith or Sylvia I think.

I forgot Liv - main association is Liv Tyler. I would assume it was short for Olivia/Livia.

I think Eliza and Margot, and probably Alma, are more ‘trendy right now’ revived names, whereas Genevieve and Tessa seem a bit less fashionable, more uncommon yet well known names.

Genevieve’s my favourite I think.

I like Eliza the best Liv sounds alike the ending is missing the others sound very pretentious and like they are trying too hard. Margot was the posh one in the Good Life and Alma was a character in Coronation street in a similar vein.

Love Margot and Liv, although agree that Liv sounds as if it is short for something else eg Olivia.
Alma reminds me of Alma Pudden, an unlikeable girl who was at Malory Towers. Also not sure whether to pronounce it Al-ma, or Ol-ma. I think it sounds quite old fashioned, to me not in a good way.
Also get confused on the pronunciation of Eliza. I know an Ell-i-za and an Ell-ee-za and can never remember which is which.

I like Genevieve and Eliza.

Alma and Margot sound like old lady names that haven't become cool again yet - Alma sounds like a homely northern woman who makes good pies and Margot sounds like a very faux middle class woman who wafts around in a Kaftan arranging flowers.

Liv just sounds like a NN for Olivia.

Genevieve - a girl who was in a reality TV show about living through the 20th century. The only time I've ever heard of anyone called that name. It's nice though.

Alma - an obese character from Enid Blyton

Margot - old lady name, getting really popular again. Written down looks a little like 'Maggot'.

Liv - chicken liver pate

Eliza - Victorian servants name. Massively prefer Beth as a shortening of Elizabeth

Alma means "apple". Liv seems like a nickname. Margot is a bit meh. For some reasons Genevieve conjures an image of somebody who would be very annoying! Eliza is pretty.
