Felicity/Effie, Caspar/Casper argh help!

Haven’t found out the sex of our baby but we have finally agreed on a name for each, kind of.

I love Felicity but my OH loves Effie, can we get away with Effie as a possible NN for Felicity?

And WDYT of Caspar/Casper and which spelling? We’re both English and I think the former is more traditional but OH thinks he’d be forever saying “with an A”. For what it’s worth, I have a name where I have to state “with a ...” and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. (Please leave your friendly ghost comments at the door, the 90s were a long time ago!)

Other suggestions that you think we might like based on these are welcome, we need middle names still. Thank you!

Wow, I never knew a name as simple as Effie could cause such divided opinions! I appreciate them all. My mum also says Effie sounds like you're trying not to swear - along the lines of 'fiddlesticks' and such like.

I've never heard of the comedian, it reminds me of Effie from Skins which isn't great when I think about it.

mouse the friendly ghost thing drives me nuts, my partner is called Thomas but nobody calls him a tank engine or makes train noises at him! Effie is my OH's choice and Felicity is the only one that I love that he is more agreeable to but I want him to feel like it's the one iyswim.

I LOVE Caspar but family have been very Hmm about the friendly ghost connotations whenever it's been mentioned. If I ever manage to actually get pregnant though I think I'd just ignore them. I would definitely stick with the traditional spelling if I were you OP.

Also think Effie is lovely but not sure it works as nn for Felicity... are there any other names you like that you could nn Effie for?

Well we can agree to disagree then. I’ve never had the issue of thinking ‘is that child called Violent?’ When I’ve heard the name. My name has the sound hell in it, my cousin has the sound scar in her name. I just don’t think it’s a relevant point if the op likes the name.

Yes I know they are different words with different meanings but that doesn't alter the fact they look very similar written down and sound similar when spoken.

You can use whatever diminutive you like for a name, how did people get Polly from Molly from Mary? It’s just a pet name.

How do I not hear violent instead of violet? Because the two words have completely different meanings and when I hear Violet as a name I imagine a small flower or the colour. Not a word with a completely different entomology.

How do you get Effie out of Felicity? It is nothing like it.

Violet is absolutely like violent. How on earth can you not see or hear that?

I was waiting for the ‘Effie sounds like a swear word’ nonsense. Similar to ‘Violet sounds like violent’. Only if you’re an idiot.

Effie nn for Felicity sounds great.

Felicity is lovely. I don't like Effie either.

Caspar is the more traditional spelling, as far as I know, and it's the one I'd choose.

I like Felicity but thought the usual nn was Fliss but think I got that from Mallory Towers books as a child.

I would spell it Caspar it looks odd with an e

I know a female Kasper, the baby sister of a child at my dgs' nursery. I think the universal response of all the adults, on being told the name, was 'how unusual!'

Middle names for Felicity, I like Jane or Ann. For Effie - Rose or Mae. For Caspar - James or David.

I know a Felicity who uses the nickname Filly.

Currently pregnant myself and our chosen names are Effie or Jasper!

Caspar is the standard English spelling of a well known name from the bible. More people will assume it’s spelt that way than ‘er’ unless you’re in the US.

Effie makes me think of the character out the Hunger Games. I think it would work as a family baby shortening of Felicity but would be good also to use the full name Felicity outside the home to give her more options for later in life.

Personally I would have guessed Casper to be spelled with an e. So if that's actually wrong if imagine a lot of people may misspell it. My surname always needs clarification and it does annoy me when it's often misspelled

Like Caspar. He would have to define ‘with an a’ or ‘with an e’ so it makes no odds.

My cousin's son is called Caspar, he's about 4 now. It's really suits him! I've loved it since day one Smile

Hahaha villain I feel the same way about the name Fleur, it's just a weird noise. If it's a girl I think we'll stick to Felicity/Flic and hopefully he'll forget about Effie!

A nickname can be whatever you want. If she's called Felicity, she might choose to be known as Flick or Fliss or Felicity, but when she's tiny, the two of you can call her Effie or Fifi or Sugarpuff Heffalump if you like. And if she likes it, it might even stick.

Felicity is gorgeous. Effie, imo, is barely a puff, not even a name. Caspar is the more usual spelling I think, but doesn't appeal to me much.
