Unsure of spelling

Hi all

Had a gender scan this morning and found out we're expecting a girl.

My BF really likes the name Harry for a girl, but I'm unsure of the best spelling Harri or Harrie?

Any thoughts please? We're not keen on Harriet.

I deliberately chose Rose as my putative boy’s name because of Ross and Russell and Rohan...........

What on earth makes a name "masculine sounding"

I guess harder sounds makes some names sound more masculine to my ears and softer sounds more feminine - since the question was asked.

But to be honest I really couldn’t care less if the OP uses Harrie or not (although I like the name) so I am going to leave this name thread as it has gotten bizarrely interrogatory for a baby name thread.

That's because Tracy is a male name. How old is he?

40 odd. Obviously Tracy is a male name, as is Vivien, but they are hardly masculine sounding. Naoise is another pretty common one here and Keelan pretty but used by boys.

Tracy and Jesse are boys names. Tracy made the boy to girl transition long enough ago it seems odd for a man, but it's still a male name in origin. Like Evelyn and Hilary. Doesn't happen the other way around though, with long established girls names becoming popular for boys. I expect people would react quite negatively to a boy called Rose.

To me Harri and Harrie are names teenage Harriets give themselves, usually temporarily. I think they both look a bit lightweight, but then I don't like diminutives as given names as I think they take options away from children. A girl called Harri has very few options other than changing their name completely if they decide they don't like having a misspelled boys name and would prefer something more traditional.

@Cosmoa Harry does not sound like a unisex name. It sounds like a boys name, she will not thank her parents for saddling her with this name, or with a 'unique' spelling. That way it's a double whammy of explaining why she has a boys name and why it's spelt wrong. I'm pretty sick of explaining why my name is spelt wrong even though it's a normal female name.

@BertrandRussell honestly of someone wanted to call their son Rose I wouldn't be baffled... (Not these days anyway)

However I think it's kind of a stupid question. I think Harri is a great name for a girl but I don't think the same of every boys name...

Some names sound unisex.. Some don't. It's as simple as that!

I know it is, I was just making a point when people are saying she’ll spend her life with people thinking she’s a boy if she’s called harry it’s not the end of the world.

I love it, especially the Harrie spelling. I also love Andie for a girl.

If it’s any consolation, my son is Jesse and we’re constantly pointing out he’s a boy.

I know about 4 girls/women known as Harry/Harri, all of whom have the name Angharad.

It’s worse than that, really- men absolutely mustn’t have female qualities! The names thing is a good proxy for this. Girl with a boy’s name? Cool. Boy with a girl’s name? Never in a million years. And boy’s names that start to be used for girls fall out of favour for boys. Someone has already mentioned Evelyn........

I agree with the idea that you wouldn't give your boy a girl's name, so why is it ok the other way around? And ONLY the other way around?

In the bigger picture, it feels like women need to have all the female and male qualities these days, but men can still just have male qualities and that's fine. I'm not sure how to articulate this feeling better, but you might get what I mean anyway.

There will most probably be a boy called Harry in the class. She will therefore be “Harry the girl”. (We have “Frankie” (male) and “Frankie the girl” in dd’s class.)

My name is Andi , can't recall anyone having a issue with my name or it's spelling .although I get get called ange a lot Confused...love harri for a little girl
