When name do you like best? Which least? For a child growing up in the UK (London to be precise).

Etta, Effie, Anya, Nina, Iona, Eva, Ella

Love Anya (but I'm a huge Buffy fan and Anya was an amazing character). Dislike Effie - reminds me of "F off". Nina is nice but I had a customer who told me that they were going to call their soon to be daughter that until they told their son (3 year old) the name and he spent the next few days running around the house going neee naaa neee naaa nee at the top of his voice (like a police siren)...they chose something else after that. Love Iona (but I know a few if that makes any difference). Etta - I like it but as a nickname. Eva and Ella are just meh.

RavenWings · 21/02/2018 19:34

Eithne is a very unfashionable name choice in Ireland - it's like calling your child Linda or Cynthia.

Etta - love it
Effie - I like it in theory but it just seems a bit insipid
Anya - nice
Nina - nice
Iona - personally I just see it as "I own a"
Eva, Ella - absolutely nope to both. Overdone and bland.

I'd go for Etta or Nina.

Sorry I don’t like any of them. Effie is particularly dreadful.
If I had to choose one it would be Nina. What about Anna?

Jjpeston · 20/02/2018 23:07

Etta first, then Effie, then Nina. All great names.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 20/02/2018 23:04

I know siblings called Iona and Nina funnily enough.
I'm a fan of Nina purely because it's my name (although my parents spelt it differently).

I love Anya ask it's one of my favourite character's names in Buffy!!

Brittanyspears · 20/02/2018 16:28

Ellas!

Brittanyspears · 20/02/2018 16:28

Loads of Evas and Evas around

Vulpius · 20/02/2018 15:56

Effie is lovely.

bridgetreilly · 20/02/2018 15:56

I like Etta and Effie, but I would prefer them to be nicknames rather than the actual name. Of your list, the only one I'd consider is Eva, but even then I prefer Evie.

Whisperingwinds · 19/02/2018 22:40

Love Ella and Nina from your list.

Anya is nice but very popular where I am from (north west London) there are 4 Anyas in a class of 40 in my daughters year and 2 in the year above and 3 in the year below that we know of Grin

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 22:36

My choice for a girl, had my child been one was Elfie. I went off it when a young woman I worked with said “oh my god I love that name. Sounds like something Paula Yates would have called her kids” Shock

Same young woman now a mum of 3 girls with not unusual but not common names. No Elfie amongst them Grin

Mrsknackered · 19/02/2018 22:34

Also, in the nicest way possible every Ella I've met has always been 'named after Fitzgerald' eyeroll

I like Nina, because I absolutely adore Simone's music, but actually as a person, I wouldn't name my daughter after her.

If you're going for 1 of those 3, has to be Etta.

Mrsknackered · 19/02/2018 22:31

Etta - love it, trendy though.
Effie - it's okay. Very skins.
Anya - I like Anya! But its much more a grown woman name to me (not a bad thing)
Nina - I like it
Iona - love it
Eva - it's nice. Prefer Eve
Ella - nice, standard name. Boring though.

Other suggestions:

Elvie
Elfina
Elka
Ember

Catra · 19/02/2018 21:36

I love them all, except Nina and Ella Ella Ella umbrella.

slashdragon · 19/02/2018 20:22

I met an Ethne the other day. (in her 70s)

Love the name and it's in the theme of the names you like.

FairyFantastic · 19/02/2018 20:20
  1. Etta
  2. Iona
  3. Nina
MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 19/02/2018 20:19

Etta, Iona & Nina are my favourites.

I don't like Eva or Ella, mainly because I know loads and the names just seem a bit unoriginal at the moment.

givemejustalittlemoretime · 19/02/2018 18:55

Lovely list! I have a Nina and I love it, obviously. I also love Etta, but in some accents (i.e., North American) I found it sounded more like "Edda" (i.e., not pronouncing the t properly) and I wasn't crazy about that.

Sophronia · 11/02/2018 17:01

Nina

Jedigirl29 · 11/02/2018 15:08

I love Effie but I am biased as she is a character from the Hunger games series which is one of my favourite books

villainousbroodmare · 11/02/2018 14:41

Love Nina and Anya. Deeply dislike Effie, it just sounds like a stiff person getting out of a chair.

prettymess · 11/02/2018 14:02

What about Nita?

Belindabauer · 10/02/2018 10:55

I like Effie and Anya best.

daisypond · 10/02/2018 10:32

From your short list - Nina - I know a few, in their early 20s now - one is Italian and the other two are both Russian. Etta feels like a diminutive to me of a much longer name - Henrietta? Iona is OK if you've got Scottish connections.

SoFancy · 10/02/2018 08:17

I’m going with Etta, then!

Etta and Nina are the best, Etta winning by a whisker.

Iona could be the new Isla methinks
