Could I please ask your opinions on the name Peter? It's a family name that would be nice to use and is growing on me, but I think it is a little unusual in the sense that it's not very common anymore.

I know a 3 yr old Peter. Lovely boy and lovely name.

Its making a come back, there have been a few characters with the name eg Fringe.

I also like Patrick, Andrew, Susan and Helen. All due a come back.

Love it. Very different to the hordes of Ollie/Albert/Noah/Finn etc names. It might be dull to older generations but unusual among the younger.

(And that they'll find out some stage in secondary school that it's French for 'to fart' makes it even better!)

Rather than “dull”, I think traditional/biblical names such as Adam, Andrew, David, Peter, Paul, Mathew, Michael, Thomas etc are names that convey/feel safe, dependable, reliable... not out of place in any class or social setting, or anywhere in the world of work... the same can’t be said for some of the younique names kids are being saddled these days!

It's a perfectly fine boys name. I think Pete is a nice nickname and would assume that's what he'd be called most of the time.

Thank you everyone.

It seems that most people like it which is great to hear, and those that don't simply find it to be boring and dull.

I fall into the camp of baby names where boring or dull is seen as a positive. We love normal :)

I don't particularly like it. As zeeboo said, it doesn't say anything to me and is a bit bland.

My husband is a Peter. I'm not a huge fan to be honest, it just doesn't 'say anything' to me. Blah and there are loads of them. My daughter has two in her year 3 class so it's getting common.

A name that is over- complicated or consciously trendy or aspirational. Lots of Ptolomies, Hugos, etc at the moment.

I like it and we considered it for ds (who is now 10 days oldSmile).

I think it’s due a revival. I’ve seen a few people mentioning it on here lately.

I 've got a 16 year old Peter. It's a great name IMO, and infinitely preferable to some of the trendy, try-hard names that are popular at the moment Wink.

Seems you can't win on MN - names are either too Yooneek or too "boring".

All I will say is no one ever thanks their parents for a made up name.

(And by the way we are going with Andrew, along with some similarly dull middle names)

Absolutely love it. I'm probably biased because it was my amazing Grandfather's name, and he was truly the best man I have ever known. If I ever have a son he will be called Peter for sure.

All that aside, I really think it's a lovely, classic name that isn't overused these days.

No- it is boring and is a wet fish of a name. Always I hate the shortening to Pete

I have a young DC Peter in P2 and at his school of around 250 kids there are at least three other Peters all younger than my DC. I think the name is on the cusp of a revival...
