Griffin and Phoenix together

This question is not really for lovers of traditional baby names.

Me and my husband both love these names. Our 2.5 year old is called Griffin. I like that it is unusual but strong. It has tones of fantasy but also is kind of a ‘surname’ name, so more conservative people don’t wince when they hear it. Now we are thinking about our second boy due soon, and we have been unable to agree on anything. Phoenix was a favourite the first time round, but we dismissed it as being on the wrong side of unusual/weird. Thing is, now it seems to be quite a popular name in our town, and I have met three little boys called Phoenix, so I’m no longer so wary of it. I kind of wish we had called our first boy Phoenix instead.

Are Griffin and Phoenix too weird as names for brothers? My heart says yes, but honestly I would have called our kids those names separately, so it’s just the combination that puts me off.

Other names on my list (I say my list because as I said DH doesn’t like them enough but we can’t agree) are:

Afton
Avery
Jude (not keen on this though now)
Micah
Keron
Devin
Rueben

All hubby has contributed is Jack and Malakai, but I really don’t like either of them.

Merlin in a Scottish accent kills me sorry (that’s where we are), but it was considered lol

Springhassprungagain May I ask what you went for in the end?

I would assume Phoenix was a girl, but regardless of that, together they are a bit much. I like Merlin.

Sigh. As I expected.

No, no teepee or tophat but there is one set of dreadlocks between us and we are a slightly quirky couple.

We’ve got a Griffin too and I too have considered Phoenix for a second and discounted it for exactly the same reasons!

Not both together, unless you live in a teepee and regularily wear a purple velvet tophat and dreadlocks.

Ruben much better than phoenix

CarlHickbread · 27/01/2018 09:13

I like it but I would think Phoenix was a girl as all the Phoenix’s that I know (2) are girls

I really like Rueben (Rue) and think it goes nicely with Griffin.

I would rather expect you to be a dragon or other mythical creature. I'm with you that either on its own in a sibling set would be fine but I wouldn't use them as brothers as I think they wouldn't appreciate the sniggering.
