What's the consensus on the name Ernest/Ernie?

I'm almost 8m preg and all through my pregnancy my partner and I have struggled to find a name we both liked.
In the end we picked 3 names each. I chose one of his (James) and he chose one of my choices (Ernest - after my grandad x)
We then played best of three games of pool to decide the name.
I won 2-0 😂 So Ernie it is, with James as a second name.
But now I'm not even sure I'm 100% on Ernest!
I'm hoping when I look into my baby's gorgeous newborn face that will help decide 😀

Part of the appeal of Ernie for me as a professional childcarer for 18yrs is I've never come across a little Ernest.
What do others think?

Lmao at the milkman, ernest wise, sesame street etc.
I think by the time my boy is old enough for peers to ridicule him those things will be outdated and irrelevant.
In fact I think to a lot of under 30's or under 25's they're probably already mean nothing, so that doesn't concern me.

I suppose if my son doesn't like his name he can choose to use his middle name or give himself a new known-by name!
Someone asked if my grandad was known as Ernie or Ernest. As far as I'm aware he was known as Nobby 😂 I assume as in the slang for sprouts, nobby greens (his surname was green) 😀

Yes, me too, I prefer Ernest to Ernie.
I would go with James Ernest, it's a cracking name !.

I like it! Though prefer Ernest to Ernie. Lovely having the link to your grandfather. Ernest James or James Ernest are both brilliant names. Maybe just see which one feels right once you meet your DS??

Don’t like either. Ernest, is v old fashioned, think of him when he is in school. Ernie, the Benny Hill milkman, Sesame Street and Ernie Wise from Morecambe and Wise.

Ernest is lovely. Ernie is a baby's name, it won't be so suitable when he's 17 and trying not to be a little boy. Plus, it makes me scream "EEEEEERNIE, YOU KNOW WE'RE GONNA GET THERE EEEEEARLY WITHOUT A WORRY OR A CARE"

Evelyn, It was introduced to England by the German House of Hanover when they inherited the British throne in the 18th century, so actually it Is Germany in its origin regardless of spelling Wink

I love it but I am bias. I am currently nearly due with my second and his first middle name will be Ernest. This is due to also it being my grandads name.

You always have the choice not to call him that if you look at him and think it doesn't suit.

Mammie earnest is an English word too - if it wasn't The Importance of Being Earnest wouldn't work! The name is Ernest in English and Ernst in German...

We have Ernie as a middle name in honour of his great grandad. He was an Ernest but was always called Ernie. What was your Grandad called, Ernie or Ernest? Our Ernie was super funny and not at all Ernest!

It's getting a negative press so thought I'd bring some positivity to your choice Smile

  • It's German and means Serious *It is also a character from the importance of being Ernest *Has a good pedigree of use through history *Cut nickname Ernie to take the grown up edge of while he's little.

I think it's a refreshing choice, don't be put of by people's personal opinion it's your choice.

I live it, but I'm not sure I'd actually use it... For me it brings to mind first The Importance of Being Earnest and second, as someone else says, the fastest milkman in the west :o

Use Ernst maybe...hmm
