Torin, Cael or Coen?

Pronounced Taw-rin and Cal (both Gaelic, we are Scottish) and Coen pronounced as you would probably expect.

Why would you use a name that is pronounced coon, knowing the connotations??

I know several Dutch Coens who do indeed use the pronunciation ‘coon’ in the UK - it’s how their name is pronounced - would you expect them to change it? Confused in Dutch it’s probably closer to Kuhn (shorter sounding) but brits seem to struggle with that.

Cael is Welsh for have. What about Mael?
Torin was/is a character in The Sims game! This is what my kids' generation (tween) think of when they hear the name, apparently.

I like Cael but I'd say that it will get mispronounced. My son has a very similar name and no one gets it right.
Torin is very nice too. Actually all three are nice Grin

Torin. But I do like Cael, now you've said how it should be pronounced. Coen is a Dutch first name or a derivative of an Irish surname. I wouldn't use it, because people could think it was Cohen, depending on how your pronounce it. Could you have Conrad? Not very Scottish, I admit.

Yes, it would be pronounced more like Coon in my accent.

There’s no way you could use that in the UK.

We've named our DS Thorin, but I loved the name Torin when pregnant too. Beautiful name and not overly used if that makes sense? At the end of the day go with whatever name you love best OP and don't worry about others' opinions 😊

Eh!? I know a few Coens (not Cohen) and we're thinking about it for a boy. Irish DP reckons it's a Scotticisation of either O'Cadhain which means "of Connacht" or Mac Giolla Chaoine which is something vaguely religious (a saint's follower I think??) but not Jewish. So would suit Scots/Irish DC.

I do like Torin a lot too

I don't see how Coen sounds like Coon in a Scottish accent? In mine (also scottish) it sounds more like Cone tbh. If it does come out pronounced as Coon then that's awful!
I know a Kal but with the Cael spelling I do think some people would mispronounce it as Kale.
The more I see Torin the more I like it.

Coen is Dutch, but is pronounced Coon, not Co-wen.

So unless you're going with the Dutch pronunciation, you can't really claim a different derivation.

Snap..there are so many stunning Scottish boys names, seems a bit of an odd choice.

I love Sholto and Ossian, Fingal..
