Would you call your DS this name?

Dh and I are expecting a DS soon. The problem is, we have never agreed on a single boy's name. My favourite boy's name for years has been Arthur. DH was actually starting to consider it (at least the closest we've ever come to agreement) and then he said it out loud with our last name and said "but it nearly rhymes, we can't do that!"

I had somehow never noticed this so put the name to the back of my mind, but a few months on and we're no closer to agreement (and I still love it!), so would you use this name for your DS?

This will probably out me but he would be Arthur McGrath.

(We have RP accents so the a in McGrath is long like in 'art' and we pronounce the 'th' at the end)

With your pronunciation of McGrath it is slightly Boaty McBoatface, sorry...

Yep, sorry OP - I also have an RP accent and it sounds like a series of children’s books.

It’s not the rhyme, though - it’s the metre. In metric terms it’s a trochee followed by an iamb which gives you that jolly DUM-di di-DUM rhythm. I’d avoid any other trochaic first names for the same reason (which would rule out Alfred, Wilfred and Albert, I’m afraid).

I do love the name but it does sound like a kids tv character. What about artie, Arlo, Hugo, Victor?

Thanks all, I'm keeping it in reserve just in case. Sadly DH is still a definite no on Barnaby but I'll keep mentioning it in case he changes his mind Smile.

And here was me think McGrath was pronounced Muh-grar (to rhyme with car) which of course would be fine with Arthur! Change how you pronounce your surname?! Grin

All the boys I know called James are naughty and there are lots of Georges about.

I love Arthur McGrath! I'd call him Artie as a nn and I like Artie McGrath even more! As a PP said, it's memorable but not ridiculous. I think a memorable name can help in a lot of situations (job interviews etc) and his would be memorable without being awkward for him.

I think Arthur McGrath is fine - I don't see the issue. It sounds postively nice. Your other suggested names are all fine too.

Ooooh I love Arthur McGrath. Flows brilliantly. I love an alliterative name - makes it memorable: Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe... umm.... trying to think of a good male example and David Davis keeps popping into my head - which really is a ridiculous name.

Arthur McGrath, however, is extremely cool. Have courage in your convictions!

I think if you both like George you should go with that. Dd having a teddy will just make it seem like it was always meant to be. I like all your and dh's names . I've always loved Wifred too . How about Frederick/ Freddie?
