These names are subject to change, but they are the two we keep coming back to at the moment.

Violet
Pros: lovely name. Floral but not OTT. Timeless. Currently haven't met anyone wth the name. An 'almost-anagram' of DP's name.
Cons: worried it will be too popular soon. People associate with horrible Violet from Roald Dahl book.
Tamsin
Pros: Never met anyone with the name. Dainty but strong, will age well. My suggestion. Cornish name (Cornwall is a dear place to me, not so much to DP).
Cons: meaning of Tamsin is 'Twin.' I know I shouldn't get caught up on meanings but growing up with a name of uncertain meaning myself I've always liked meanings.

workshyfop I really liked Vivienne, but I watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine and there's a character I associate it with now sadly.
ErskineMay interesting, thank you! DP's name wasn't that popular at school, but now it is very popular - same for his sister - and that frustrates him sometimes, so I don't want to have that repeated. I think nowadays 'unusual' names are hard to come by, in comparison to my generation, so maybe going with the flow is the way forward hmmm...

Tamsin sounds v 80s to me. It reminds me of the Tammy Girl shop. I knew two Tamsins at school in the 80s/90s. It’s like Melanie, a perfectly nice name but associated in my head with another era.

I like Violet more. Children like having names that fit with their generation.

I vote for Violet. Only ever known one and that was my lovely Grandma. Born 1920. Flowery name but strong woman. Her sister was Lilly so I think her parents liked flower names. I've not heard of any children called Violet. It may rise in popularity but I don't think it will become one of those names that everyone chooses.

celticmissey oh dear. I can’t help but think of Violet from Downton Abbey but she’s a sassy old lady so I can’t really complain about that!
Plumes hmmm true. Yes I haven’t met a Tamsin, the only on I’ve heard of properly is Tamsin Greig.
AnyaMoondial Tamara is lovely but I'm wanting something for a girl with a sharper ending like 'N' or 'T' or 'D' even. Tamara is sweet though.

Geek that I am I've checked the stats and 22 Tamsins were born in 2016 v 959 Violets.

I prefer Tamsin and definitely think it’s less popular than Violet. I personally don’t like the harsh ‘Vi’ sound, and it’s too similar to ‘violent’ for me.

Don't like Violet - know a little girl with this name and her friends call her violin which she hates! It also reminds me of elderly ladies...I had a friend called Tamasin not Tamsin but I think both of these are lovely.

Tamsin is great. Good strong name and I haven't met a young one in many a year.

The only Violets I know are over 80 or under 8 so definitely not timeless in my opinion. In fact 'faddy' is how I'd describe it. Vintage - tick. Floral - tick. Twee - tick.

Moveablefeast fair point. That is one of my concerns. On another note, that is possibly the best matched friendship group ever haha!
MikeUniformMike you've raised a good point. I was surprised at the various pronunciations I've heard whilst asking around to be honest!
Hopinthescotch Both my mother and myself have had to spell out our names (first and surname, maiden and married) so to have a child who may have to follow in those footsteps could be a tradition! haha! Thankyou for giving the heads up though, I hadn't considered Tamsin a tricky name to spell hmmm

I know one Tamsin who is in her 30s. She isn't very keen on her name at all and said it was tiresome spelling it out all the time. I prefer Violet.
