Libby?

Love the name Liberty with Libby nn.

Most people assume Libby is short for Elizabeth.

I personally wouldn't do Libby on its own. I just... I don't know. It's so much a nickname for a longer name that it feels a bit transient to me as a full name.

Really like the name Libby and would just have it on its own.

I too have a 22 year old Libby. Just Libby. She has always loved her name. We sometimes call her Liberty (as a nickname) and I have often thought that perhaps we should have put that on her birth certificate. A fairly dreadful family member is called Liz/Elizabeth so that was never option sadly as I think Elizabeth is a lovely name too.

I wouldn't go with Elizabeth etc unless you're completely sure you'd be happy with her changing to using it or another nickname instead of Libby.

Fwiw I like Liberty, dislike Elizabeth. I also like Libby but I'm not sure I'd want to be called just Libby iyswim.

I'm an Elizabeth who has never (barring a brief period in my teens) wanted to be known as anything but Elizabeth, and has always despised being called Liz. I went to school (various schools) with a couple of Libbys, a Beth, a few Liz(zie)s, all short for Elizabeth. They had no problem with being known by their preferred shortening. Meanwhile, I had teachers at secondary school calling me any number of different nicknames for Elizabeth because there was nothing by my name in the register and most Elizabeths in my school preferred something else! So, from that point of view, it should be simple to make sure she goes by the right name.

Calling her Elizabeth gives her a few more choices when she's older, as it's a name with countless pet forms (I like to use more obscure ones online), but Libby on the BC means she'll definitely get called it!

I know a Libby in her 60's and it suits her. She was christened Elizabeth but change it officially. I also know a few young Libbys too who are all just Libby. It's not to my taste but I prefer it to Elizabeth which is my middle name and I've always hated it.

I would warn against choosing a name based on an expected nickname. My dd has a first name with a few different diminutives. One we really don't like. I tried to introduce the one I liked but it just didn't stick and now we use a different one as it's how ds pronounced her name. So I say just Libby is fine.

Just call her Libby. I don’t like Elizabeth much myself, always think it sounds a bit like a hiss.

I'm liking it less and less the more I see it written down. Flabby... dribbly... lippy... and kinda childish.

Ds2 would have been Libby with Elizabeth on bc.

I would go for a full name.

Libby doesn't seem like a full name and is childish. A full name would mean that your daughter could choose whether she wants to be Libby when she's older.

I don't like the sound of Libby. Not sure what it is but it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Libby is great on its own and I'm also normally a person who'd tend towards putting the full name on bc, but it totally depends on the names.

lawyered Alright, but traditionally Libby is a shortening for Elizabeth. Much like you'd assume most Alexs are short for Alexandra or Alexander. Liv/Livvy would be the natural shortening for Olivia.

Superbeagle - we haven’t had anyone assume our daughter is an Elizabeth (she’s an Olivia). I introduce her as Olivia formally and we say “but you can call me Libby”.

I cane across the name Libania recently. Unusual but would work.

People will assume she's Elizabeth, whether you put that on the BC or not.

If you insist on a shortening from day 1, people will follow your lead and she will only ever be known as Libby.

I'm an Elizabeth. I never liked Libby, nor Liz/Lizzy, so always insisted upon Ella and Ellie and that was fine. If you introduce your child as Libby, people will call her Libby.

We have a Libby! Her full name is Olivia - which we use on her paperwork. It works well and I love both names.

We’ve got a Libby (4yrs), full name Elizabeth on BC. We too didn’t want Liz as a nickname, and it has worked perfectly.

She’s never been called anything but Libby, we were able to register her at docs pre-school etc as Libby.
She’s registered at school as Elizabeth but has Libby on all her books/peg etc and we consider her first initial to be L not E.

I know a couple (both aged about 7 but no connection to each other) who are both just Libby

I have loved Libby as a nickname for Elizabeth since my teens (i blame Libby Kennedy from neighbours) but I like it as a stand-alone name as well
