Boys names...aargh

2nd boy due in a few months..

Currently have Ivar, pronounced Eye-vah not Eeee-vah. I'm totally stuck and my husband totally useless. He won't suggest anything but says no to all my ideas.

Names I like but he doesn't
Gabriel
Laurie
Willem
Hugo/Hugh

Asa has been mentioned and not totally scoffed at but I'm not 100% keen to be honest.

Middle name will be Alexander unless it really doesn't fit.

Any ideas??

What about just a good old fashioned Jonathan?

pussygolightly · 22/01/2018 16:42

Casper?

bananagrabber · 22/01/2018 16:40

Oh and we're probably going with Alexander as a first name...

bananagrabber · 22/01/2018 16:39

I love Etienne! Had it on our list for Ds2 but decided it might be odd without any French connection... There's one at my son's playgroup.

BertrandRussell · 22/01/2018 16:36

I’ve known 2 Ivos in my life and there’s a comedian called Ivo Graham. All Eye-vo.

Plumes · 22/01/2018 16:30

I know an Ivo who pronounces his name as eye-vo.

MikeUniformMike · 22/01/2018 16:13

It's pronounced Eevo.
Look it up if you don't believe me.

schrutefarms · 22/01/2018 16:01

@BertrandRussell I know I’d end up calling him Winnie as a nn!

I’ve never met an Etienne so I’m not sure about nns but I guess Eti would work.

@MikeUniformMike I thought Ivo was eye-vo too. I’ve never come across an ee-vo.

No. It's pronounced Eevo.

BertrandRussell · 22/01/2018 15:52

Ivo is pronounced Eye-vo, surely?

pipilangstrumpf · 22/01/2018 15:19

I know a little Etienne. Lovely name. His name generally doesn't get shortened, it's so easy to say, it doesn't really need to imo.

MikeUniformMike · 22/01/2018 14:52

Wyn/Wynn is a boy's name and it means blessed or white.
It is Welsh and is occasionally used as a first name but was hugely popular as a middle name in the 1960s an 70s in Wales.
As a Welsh-speaker I find it a bit lacking in consonants.
One benefit of Wyn is it sounds like the word 'win' .
Etienne is indeed French for Stephen. I'd go with Stephen.
Ivo is pronounced Eevo. It's a bit too similar to Ivar in how it looks.

BertrandRussell · 22/01/2018 14:30

Sorry-I meant Wynn as the feminine sounding one......!

How do French speakers shorten Etienne?

Standardpubquizname · 22/01/2018 10:31

I know of a little Etienne , he must be about 7 or 8, I don't know him well but have never thought of his name as being particularly feminine.

schrutefarms · 22/01/2018 10:13

@Chathamhouserules lovely but can’t use it.

@BertrandRussell I don’t know, probably. I know it’s not the most masqueline of names but I’d expect most people to know it’s not a girls name?? It’s the French version of Stephen!

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 22/01/2018 09:40

Do you think he'll mind people expecting him to be a girl?

Chathamhouserules · 22/01/2018 09:37

Not keen myself. But not too pretentious assuming you guys aren't pretentious yourselves... How about Finn?

schrutefarms · 22/01/2018 09:27

We had a bit of a breakthrough last night and husband said he liked 2 names that I suggested. They’re not my favourites but it’s a start.

Names are Wynn and Etienne.

Out of the 2 I think I prefer Wynn but not sure it works with our double barrell surname. Husband seems quite keen on Etienne. I like it but is it just ridiculously pretentious?? We aren’t French but our surname is and husband has a French 1st name (obviously some French ancestory on his side somewhere).

Opinions welcome!

Geoffrey is the best suggestion so far.

mondler · 21/01/2018 19:18

I love Quin. How about:

Evan
Arlo
Louis
Spencer

PaintingOwls · 21/01/2018 17:43

I detect Eastern European tones, so how about Ivar and Boris?

schrutefarms · 21/01/2018 17:37

Thank you all for the suggestions, there’s quite a few that I like but can’t use for whatever reason/husband says no. I love Quentin!

Husband admitted today that he liked Ivo (I mentioned it after seeing it on another thread), I love Ivo but in what world can we have Ivar and Ivo??! I feel like he’s being deliberately combative now. I don’t know where to go from here but I’m sure we’ll find something eventually 🙄.
