Opinion on Arthur. We like it because it’s traditional and has welsh origin but just not sure it’s ‘the one’

Thanks ladies. Going to keep looking but this is on the list for now. It’s only ranked around 30 so I would be surprised if he is ‘one of many’ in a class. As long as it’s not top 20 I’m not too bothered :) x

Loads of baby Arthurs, really common name atm. If you don't mind him being one of many in the class then it's nice but I wouldn't use it.

DP’s nephew (born in August) is Arthur. However everyone including his parents Just call him “A”. They said they wanted something “kingly” for a name but I personally don’t like it. Reminds me of the kid’s tv show with the bear and my mum said she had a fat bald uncle called Arthur so she just thinks of him!
I do, however, think Artie is a very nice variation on the name, especially as it’s becoming a very common name now

I love this name. I can't use it for exactly the same reason as Evelynismyformerspyname but it's a lovely name.

I'm due in 3 weeks and we're 99% sure he will be Arthur.

Royal baby did put me off a little bit still love the name. Philip was discussed as a potential middle name and decided against, perhaps luckily as those are Prince Williams exact middle names!

We are probably going to use Jack as a middle name (family connection), though also liked the sound of Thomas or Joseph.

Other names I liked were Noah (mega popular), Eric and Elliott.

I really like it.

Couldn't use it because we live in a country where it would be pronounced "are- tur". Which is not horrible but different enough to be annoying, and I definitely would not make my child a target by demanding people pronounce their name a certain way... So vetoed.

I like George too, also vetoed due to the way it's pronounced here - good job I guess as my boys are older than the royal kids and would have been saddled with the same two names in advance (though could at least have pointed out the royal children were named after them, not the other way around...).

I really dislike it. I also really dislike Stanley and Sidney. I just find them dreary! Arthur in particular sounds sludgy - think it is the long ‘ar’ sound. I’m definitely in the minority though!

Thank you for all the responses. I wasn’t aware that it was tipped as the top name for baby Royal, luckily I am due after so I will have a backup name prepared I guess🙈

As TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag (couldn't agree more!) says, it could well be a royal baby name but there's a 50/50 chance of its royal babiness being a boy to start with, so if you really like it I wouldn't let it put you off. It's nowhere near the Oliver/Jack level of popularity and I think it's a lovely traditional name without being as faddy as some of the other old-fashioned baby names around, if that makes any sense! It's a proper man's name.

It's had a massive leap in popularity recently and continuing to rise if that's something that bothers you. I also agree that the new royal baby due in April is likely to be Arthur if it's a boy. I really like it but we went against it for DS in the end because we are in the south of England and hardly anyone around where we live seems to pronounce THs properly and I didn't want to be the crazy mum correcting everyone when they saw "Arfur", I knew personally it would drive me mad!

I went to school with an Arthur and he was teased every day, this was when every boy was called Gary. I know times change but I always think about him

I really like it. It’s on my list for dc2.

The only small issue I have with it, is that I think it’s one of the favourites for the royal baby, which puts me off slightly.
