Thoughts on names Madison and Elsie???

Usually keep names I like to myself, told family these two last night and remembered why I do that 😂
Interested in what other people think of these names now and any other girl suggestions?..

It's not that strange to use a name like that, math.

I was given a name that was out of date - basically I was given it a generation too early.

I didn't like it growing up, but I really like it now.

And it's quite nice having a name that's current as an adult, rather than just being yet another 40-something Karen, Nicole, Jennifer, Claire, Sarah, Angela, Joanne, etc.

Sally and Jane belong with Sharon and Keith - names 'whose time has not yet returned'. They are not perfectly normal names now - they were fine 50-60 years ago. They are out of style, Sally moreso than Jane. Lisa and Linda are perfectly normal names too, but it would be strange to use them.

Madison is awful (along with Addison, Adalynn, Madelynn, Makayla, Makenzie, Mckenna, Riley, Dakota, Lexi, Kelsey, Kayleigh, Kayla, Skyla, Taylor, Sailor...) Elsie is dreadful (along with Poppy, Alfie, Charlie, Archie, Dolly, Dulcie...)

Madison is ok. I don't like the grannie chic names that are coming back in and don't like Elsie. She was my nannas mate with headscarf and curlers.

I don't mind Madison, it's not really my style but it's OK.

I dislike Elsie, it manages to be grannyish, cutesy & nicknamey all at once, none of which appeals to me.

Marianne is pretty, Marissa and Marisol are variations.

I'm not keen on either. I don't like Madison as it's a surname-type name. Elsie seems quite popular on here, but it seems very dated and old lady and not in a good way to me. It's short for Elizabeth, so there's loads of nicer names from that - Elise/Eliza/Elspeth/Lisbeth/Betty, etc

Elsie, while it has a pretty sound, still seems 'old lady' to me. Elsa doesn't though.

Madison has a nice sound too, but a bit artificial and American to me. Plus it's really a surname (like in Madison Avenue in New York, named after an early president). First use as a girls' name was after it was made up by the mermaid character in the 80s film 'Splash' (she got it from a street sign!). But Madeleine is so close and absolutely gorgeous. Madeleine McCann is a sad association, but of course she is not the only girl with the name - its been around forever.

Madison seems so impersonal and cold, still sounds like a place name.

Elsie is whiny. I dislike Eli for the same reason. Prefer Edith. And El- names for girls are EVERYWHERE. If she ended up as Ellie for short she'd join about three million other girls her age!

Madeleine, Melissa, Marianne better than Madison.

Madison is of the Taylor, Tyler ilk of names to me. It was very popular about 15 years ago, so has a slightly 'past it' feel to me.

Elsie is fine - part of the cohort of 'old lady' names coming back into fashion. Too nickname-y for my tastes.

The fact that it's 'old lady' is irrelevant - I was given an old lady name in the 70s, which is massively popular now I'm in my 40s. It was SO old lady then, that no-one else was being given it for another generation. Elsie doesn't quite fall into that category. Grin

Madison doesn’t sound like a girl’s name to me, I just think of Madison Avenue. A bit municipal. Elsie is OK.

Your child is more likely to get the Mick taken out of them if they are named jane or Sally! Trust me school was less than 30 years ago for me 😜

Mary is a name that is never out of fashion. Why would it be cruel to call a child Jane or Sally? They are great names. They aren't old lady names to me, but then, my generation were called those names and while i am middle aged, I am not old I just feel old!
