'my uncle's ex wife's uncles friends line managers vet knew a La-a'

It's bullshit. My eyes nearly roll out of my head every time I see it on here, and for the first time ever, I've heard it in real life.

If I am wrong, and you know a La-a I want cold, hard evidence.

It's pronounced Ladasha to anyone who hasn't heard the borderline racist urban myth.

Yes and if you pronounce Tanya as Tarn-yer, it's even more tenuous. I'm trying to do a South Wales accent, but I've gone blank Grin

Everard and Ophelia Dick sound like they’d get in well with Tanya Haas, another baby born the same day as me in hospital (I shan’t say where, but it’s also South Wales- what is it with this area and ‘odd’ names?) . I’ve never met her but she’s provided me with anecdote fodder in conversations such as this!!

I always assume the person is lying/mistaken when they say they know a La-a.

But I would now never come out and say so because I ended up with a very red face over (what I thought was) the Everard and Ophelia Dick urban legend. I'd seen it mentioned on here and everyone had said it was offensive and always untrue. So when a real life colleague said that her husband had gone to school with the pair, I told her (shamefully confidently) that it was an urban myth. She swore blind it was true. I googled the names and sure enough they came up - in the area that the colleague's husband was at school Blush Blush

I now keep very quiet over the most outlandish of claims - just in case!!

Oh dear lord- it’s only just struck me, seeing it written down so many times, that my dd name (Lara) is only a vertical line away from being La-a 😂

My neighbours brothers wife's best friends aunties dog walkers nephew, also went to school with a La-a. Wonder if it's the same one. Grin

@dolwar We may know the same paediatric doctor as a friend of mine in the same profession has also met one. She's married to a black guy so would question whether she's racist.

Oh my friend's sister's husband's sister once taught a La-a 🙄

On the other hand, I genuinely do know a KC. She was the admissions director of the private school my DC attended when we were living in the US. I never found out what KC stood for (I assume something) as she was listed as KC in the faculty directory and always signed off as KC on official documents.

Ladasha is an African-American name. La-a is a ridiculous, illiterate and downright bizarre spelling of it, so it suggests that people who use this name frequently, i.e. African-Americans on the whole, are illiterate, silly, etc.

There are people named La-a, but Snopes, who has been hunting this myth for a while. Has yet to find one older than the Internet myth

So yes, they exist, but only after the Internet had made the name widely known.

Unless one is found who is older.

(And yes, this name has been mentioned frequently on MN)

I’ve never met a La-a but I have met an Aphrodisia. And if one person (or most likely even two people) come to the conclusion that this is a good name for their DD? Someone named KC or La-a might actually exist...

And nearly everyone seems to ‘know someone’ who ‘ knows someone’ called it. I believe I read that it had never been registered as a name with the ONS. It’s usually someone has a ‘friend’ who taught a girl called it. Bollocks did they.
