Was struggling with girls names but DH suggested Brianna. Pronounced Breeanna.
I like that it's unusual but not unheard of and the shortening of Bree is pretty too.

What do you think, yay or nay?

The first thing that comes to mind is that it's an American name. Whilst you may say it has Celtic roots, most people will think of it as an American name.

I don't think it's particularly nice- it seems like the feminine version of Brian and the nn Brie is cheese...

When shortened, I write Bri. I tend not to go by the nickname because of the (delicious) cheese though!

Brie Larson is a Brianne. I don’t know if she’s amazing or not. Just interesting that these high profile Bries pick that spelling rather than Bree. Maybe they just love cheese?

I know a Breesha which is similar (if you like Bree as a shortened version) but never met a Brianna. It’s ok-nothing wrong with it.

Brie Bella is amazing. She’s a Brianna... married to a Bryan now I think about it...

I am Irish and live in the US and the only place I've heard it is in the US where it was quite popular for girls who would be mid-late teens now.

My name is Brianna. People in the UK seem to look at me confused when I say it. Starbucks writes 'Rhiannon' nearly every time. That said, I don't mind the name, get a lot of compliments on it, and it doesn't sound annoying when shouted on a playground!

I like it a lot. I would always assume it's Celtic in origin, never American. I'm quite surprised people see it as Americna. I don't see it as a feminisation of Brian either - even if it is. It's pronounced differently. Besides, loads, perhaps the majority, of girl names are the female equivalent of a male name. It doesn't make it a lesser name, it's just the female name.

It looks and sounds like a female version of Brian which is not a nice name imo.

I do like Brielle though (pronounced Bree-ell)

I agree it sounds Americanised (despite the origin).
I have a Bryony and was worried about her being called Bry, or Brian, but it’s not happened.

I don’t dislike it but it will mean a lifetime of explaining how to pronounce it of spell it.
I have an American friend who spells her name like that but pronounces it Bry-Anna

Like you couldn't think of a nice girl's name and just went with a fairly ugly mans name and bunged an 'a' on it.

(General dislike of feminised men's names though, not as if there is a shortage of girl names)
