Bizarre spellings of names

Anyone seen or heard a name which has a ridiculous spelling? I was served in a shop today by a Georja.

Looked very wrong

American and I've known plenty of Megans/Meghans. The one with "h" is just considered an alternative spelling in the same way as Katherine/Catherine, Sara/Sarah, Rachel/Rachael, etc. Never heard anyone say it's "to seem Irish." Anyway it's a well-accepted spelling of the name, not a particularly unique/trendy one.

There is a child at my daughter's nursery who has part of their name spelled as 'Bobeigh' so I assume Bobby/Bobbie but it did take me a minute to work out.
My daughter's name is one that has been posted here with unusual spellings but we used the traditional one.

My own name is one that people struggle to spell correctly, it isn't an unusual spelling or name, people are just lazy about listening to the pronunciation. People even spell it wrong replying to emails which clearly have it spelt correctly! Hopefully DD will not have the same problem but you never know...

The Father of the Leica (Lisa) concerned did indeed get the spelling from the camera brand.

Leica is a brand of camera, taken from the first three letters of the founder's surname, Leitz, and the first two letters of the word 'camera', so the c is hard - Lie-ka.

There's a Russian female name Laika, a transliteration of Лайка, which is pronounced the same by English speakers. It was famously borne by a space dog and literally means 'barker', apparently, so I don't know how often it's given to humans as opposed to canines.

Other than that, I can't find any reference to Leica as a name, except on one baby name website, where the meaning is given as "camera brand". Grin

I used to work with a Kellleigh. The three "L"s isn't a typo.
What's wrong with the parents? Just name her Kelly!!!

In the case of English common nouns, silent letters and apparently random combinations are a function of the mixed influences on the language and changes in pronunciation down the centuries.

In the case of personal names, the addition of random letters has no such rationalisation and does not make a name look better.

It makes the giver, and unfortunately the bearer, look silly.

I thought Jorga was a foreign variant but I think I only thought that from reading it here!

Just had a google and it does just seem to be an English variant of Georgia.
